5.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Dominican Republic Today: USGS

A moderate earthquake struck 8 miles, about 13 km, from Estebanía in the Dominican Republic Monday afternoon, the United States Geological Survey map shows.

The quake hit just after 3 p.m. local time and struck at a shallow depth of about 6 miles, or 10 km, meaning the seismic event could be felt more on the surface.

No damage or injuries were immediately reported Monday afternoon.

Estebanía is located in the Azua Province of the Dominican Republic in the southeast part of the province, about 64 miles, or 103 km from the capital of Santo Domingo.

The earthquake comes more than two months after the area experienced a 5.7 magnitude quake that struck on August 5.

This is a breaking news story. Updates to come.
