APD responding to body found downtown

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police officers are responding to reports of a body found in downtown Saturday after a water rescue call overnight.

Shortly after noon Saturday, the Austin Police Department said officers were investigating after a person was found dead near the intersection of San Antonio Street and Cesar Chavez Street.

First responders conducted a water rescue overnight after reports of people getting washed downstream off Burnet Road. Austin-Travis County EMS medics responded to the water rescue call near the 5200 block of Burnet Road. APD said the call came in around 12:40 a.m. Saturday.

ATCEMS said multiple agencies, including Travis County STAR Flight, responded.

However, ATCEMS said at 2:36 a.m. that public safety teams were unable to locate a victim after an extensive search.

KXAN reached out to APD for more details and was told four people experiencing homelessness were washed away near a storm drain. Two of the four were rescued, but a man and a woman were swept away and were not found.

APD is expected to hold a briefing to provide more information. This article will be updated when that information is available.
