Former Bastrop County ESD chief dies in Kentucky UPS plane crash

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A former Bastrop County ESD No. 1 commissioner and chief died in the UPS Flight 2796 cargo jet crash in Louisville, Kentucky, on Tuesday.

According to UPS, Chief Dana Diamond was named as one of the crew members on board the flight.

“Words can’t express the sorrow we feel over the heartbreaking Flight 2976 accident. It’s with great sorrow that we share the names of the UPS pilots on board UPS Flight 2976. Captain Richard Wartenberg, First Officer Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Captain Dana Diamond were operating the flight,” UPS said.

Bastrop County ESD No. 1 issued a statement Friday morning expressing condolences for Diamond.

“He ran towards danger so the rest of us can step back from it and that kind of devotion to his community leaves a mark on everyone it touches,” BCESD1 said. “He leaves behind not only a legacy of service but also the memories with fellow firefighters and the community he served.

“His contribution to the citizens of Bastrop County Texas are immeasurable.  May his family find comfort in knowing he served our community to make it a better place and may we honor his memory.”
