Chargers DB likely facing double NFL punishment for actions vs Chiefs

Tempers flared Sunday afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium as the Los Angeles Chargers (9–4) and Kansas City Chiefs (6–7) squared off.

Chargers veteran defensive back Tony Jefferson was ejected after delivering a hard hit on Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton, who was left injured on the turf. Officials flagged the play as unnecessary roughness, ruling the contact appeared to be helmet-to-helmet and excessive enough to warrant an ejection.

The situation escalated further as Jefferson exited the field, when he was seen flipping off Chiefs fans. That gesture, combined with the hit on Thornton, is likely to result in a significant fine from the league later this week.

“Chargers safety Tony Jefferson ejected for this hit and likely facing a fine as well,” NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero posted.

Many football fans believed Jefferson’s hit on Thornton was simply a football play, which viral on social media moments after Jefferson left the field.

“It was not that bad of a hit. Everyone’s being overdramatic,” a fan said.

Someone else added, “Nothing bad with that hit. It’s ridiculous to think these guys can stop at full speed or not naturally lead with their heads.”

Another person wrote, “Hot take, that’s a clean hit. WR puts his head down after the defender has already launched himself at the WR and put his head to the side. DB was going in with shoulder for the most part.”

“After the video started with the scuffle, I expected significantly worse of a hit. Definitely a flag, but ejection? C’mon now,” one more fan commented.

The Chargers beat the Chiefs in Week 1, and shortly after the play, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a goal-line interception that ended the drive and kept the Chiefs trailing 16–13 midway through the fourth quarter.
