John Harbaugh’s Giants deal makes rare change to power structure

The wait is over for John Harbaugh and the New York Giants.

The organization’s new head coach is signed on and enters his new journey with the Giants, causing a rare power shift, as he reportedly has a reporting line directly to team ownership.

Clearly, the Giants did all they could to satisfy Harbaugh’s needs in a competitive coaching market.

The Complex Deal

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Harbaugh lands a five-year contract with the Giants.

New York general manager Joe Schoen is expected to remain in place within the front office, but he won’t have the same power over Harbaugh as he did with Brian Daboll and Mike Kafka. The Giants have given Harbaugh his primary request, as he had the same setup with the Baltimore Ravens.

As Albert Breer notes, this is the first time the Giants will have a head coach report directly to ownership.

Harbaugh’s Statement

“I’m proud and honored to the head coach of this historic franchise, and especially excited to work with the Mara and Tisch families,” Harbaugh told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“But most of all, I can’t wait to get started with the great players on this football team to see what we can accomplish together.”

Harbaugh joins the Giants after coaching the Baltimore Ravens from 2008 to 2025. The one-time Coach of the Year, and Super Bowl XLVII Champion wasn’t expecting a change of scenery after an 8-9 season in Baltimore.

However, after the Ravens struggled to make the playoffs for the first time since 2021, the organization called for a change. Many teams showed interest in Harbaugh the moment he was let go. The Giants were the ones to make the strongest impression, ultimately winning his services.
