Donald Trump’s approval rating plummets with least educated white Americans

President Donald Trump‘s approval rating has plummeted among white voters without a college degree, a new poll suggests, indicating friction within a core pillar of his base in a year when voters head to midterm elections.

According to CBS News/YouGov polling, Trump’s net approval rating among these voters fell from +36 points in February 2025 to −8 points in May 2026, a total decline of 44 percentage points.

The earlier poll was conducted February 5 – 7, 2025, among 2,175 U.S. adults, and had a ±2.5-point margin of error.
The later was conducted last Wednesday to Friday among 2,064 U.S. adults, and had a ±2.7-point margin of error.

Non-college educated white voters proved key to Trump’s electoral success in the 2024 presidential election and their drift away from him could affect the GOP’s success in the fast-approaching midterm elections.

Republicans have slim majorities in both chambers of Congress and losing just a handful of seats to the Democrats could allow the party to hamper Trump or Republican agendas during the rest of the term. Traditionally, the party that does not hold the White House tends to do better in midterm elections and in 2018, during Trump’s first presidency, Republicans lost the House.
