Who Is Fahima Mahamud? Somali Woman Featured in Nick Shirley’s Viral Daycare Investigation Charged in Alleged $4.6M Fraud As Minnesota Schemes Total $90M
Prosecutors say the owner of a Minneapolis daycare — which gained national attention after appearing in an infamous YouTube video about alleged Somali fraud — siphoned $4.6 million from the government.
The arrest of Fahima Mahamud, 50, comes as federal officials revealed that 15 defendants across Minnesota are facing charges in alleged fraud schemes involving nearly $90 million in taxpayer money, which remain unaccounted. U.S. Assistant Attorney for Fraud Enforcement General Colin McDonald said that the cases involve at least seven Medicaid programs that were allegedly “systematically pilfered by fraudsters” who treated Minnesota-run programs “like their personal piggy bank.” “The fraud here in Minnesota is shocking,” McDonald said at a news conference.

The Trump administration intensified its focus on fraud in Minnesota after independent journalist Nick Shirley drew attention to several daycare centers in the city in a viral video, including a number of Somali-run operations such as the misspelled Quality “Learing” Center.
Prosecutors allege that Mahamud submitted fraudulent reimbursement requests to the federal government while serving as CEO of the Future Leaders Early Learning Center.
Mahamud allegedly filed more than 13,000 claims between October 2022 and December 2025, leading to nearly $4.63 million in taxpayer-funded reimbursements through the Child Care Assistance Program run by the Minnesota Department of Human Services, according to court filings.
Authorities said that at certain points, Mahamud claimed the daycare was providing two meals a day to around 1,000 children every day of the week. Prosecutors said Mahamud was aware the meal counts were “false and inflated” but continued submitting them in order to keep the money for herself.
According to the court filing, investigators allege that she redirected much of the taxpayer funding toward purchasing real estate and benefiting herself and other businesses.
Mahamud’s business, the Future Leaders Early Learning Center, was among the daycare centers highlighted in Nick Shirley’s viral fraud investigation.
In the video, Shirley visited the daycare in December and was met by an unidentified woman who allegedly told him he could not complete an application to enroll a child. A month later, in January, Mahamud shut down the Future Leaders Early Learning Center.

In February, Mahamud was charged with wire fraud linked to the Feeding Our Future scandal — the massive $250 million fraud scheme linked to members of Minnesota’s Somali community that later fueled President Donald Trump’s federal crackdown in the state.
Prosecutors said Mahamud received about $854,000 through the Federal Child Nutrition Program as part of the Feeding Our Future scheme between December 2020 and March 2023.
Nearly 80 people have been charged in connection with the alleged operation, which investigators say used the Feeding Our Future nonprofit to steal around $250 million in taxpayer money intended to feed children in need.
Authorities allege that instead of being used for food programs, much of the money funded extravagant lifestyles. Dozens of individuals — many from Minnesota’s large Somali community — have since been convicted for their involvement in the overlapping fraud cases.
Last year, President Donald Trump claimed Somalis were “completely taking over” Minnesota and accused members of the community of widespread fraud, comments that preceded the large-scale immigration enforcement crackdown in the state.
Aimee Bock, identified by prosecutors as the mastermind behind the Feeding Our Future fraud scheme, was sentenced Thursday morning to more than 41 years in prison.
The 45-year-old was convicted last March on multiple charges related to conspiracy, wire fraud, and bribery for her role in the operation.
