Father Sentenced After Pit Bulls Fatally Maul 3-Year-Old Daughter

An Ohio judge sentenced Warren Houston to between five and seven years in prison after finding him guilty in connection with the fatal 2024 dog attack that killed his 3-year-old daughter, Kingsley Wright.

Hamilton County Judge Virginia Tallent ruled Friday that Houston recklessly ignored the danger posed by his pit bull terriers, leading to the child’s death inside his Cincinnati apartment. Prosecutors argued that Houston left Kingsley sleeping near dogs that were improperly secured inside a damaged cage with a faulty latch.

What Happened to Kingsley Wright?

As per court testimonies, Kingsley was visiting Houston’s Roselawn apartment in Cincinnati over the holiday period. The incident took place on Dec. 26, 2024, when Kingsley fell asleep on the couch in Houston’s living room, which housed the two pit bull terriers, located just feet away from the dogs’ cage. In the early hours of Dec. 27, the dogs got out of their cage and killed the sleeping girl.

Houston then contacted emergency services after realizing that Kingsley was dead in his apartment. Houston claimed that at first, he did not know how it happened and thought that the dogs were still locked in their cage.

The child suffered catastrophic injuries. Prosecutors said she died from massive blood loss and severe trauma. A coroner testified that portions of her hair were found throughout the apartment after the mauling.

Judge Tallent found Houston guilty of having recklessly subjected Kingsley to danger by leaving him around some dogs that he believed were capable of being vicious.

Houston was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide and child endangerment. Prosecutors argued he disregarded “known risks” involving the dogs and their enclosure.

His defense attorney maintained throughout the trial that the tragedy was an unforeseeable accident and argued the dogs had no documented violent history toward humans before the attack.

The behavioral specialists testified that the owner was aware of their aggressive nature. In particular, witnesses testified that the pets could not play with plush toys as they would tear them to shreds; moreover, one of the dogs was kept separately from the others while being fed.

Also, the prosecution concentrated its attention on the state of the cage in which the dogs were locked. The cage was called “rickety” as its bottom latch was broken and its wires bent so that the dogs escaped.

Nevertheless, Houston claimed he had never seen the dogs attack anyone before and the animals were well-secured when he went to bed.

Could Kingsley Wright’s Mother File a Civil Lawsuit?

As of now, no public court filing confirms that Kingsley’s mother, Gina Smith, has officially filed a civil lawsuit against Houston.

However, reports from the sentencing hearing indicated a civil action could potentially follow. Victim impact statements from Smith were read in court Friday, where she described the attack as the result of Houston’s “recklessness, carelessness, and glaring indifference” toward their daughter’s safety.
