North Korea fired missiles toward west coast in latest show of force
- South Korea, the United States and Japan are closely monitoring the situation.
- The test follows North Korea’s claims of developing advanced missiles and electromagnetic weapons.
- Analysts say the launches highlight Pyongyang’s continued military expansion despite sanctions.
North Korea fired multiple missiles, including at least one short-range ballistic missile, toward waters off its west coast on Tuesday, marking the country’s latest demonstration of military strength as leader Kim Jong Un continues pushing what he has described as an “irreversible” nuclear strategy.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missiles were launched at around 1 p.m. local time from Chongju in North Pyeongan Province. South Korean military officials said they were monitoring the situation closely alongside the United States and Japan.
The launch was North Korea’s first known missile test since April 19, when Pyongyang fired several short-range ballistic missiles that state media later claimed were equipped with cluster bombs.
Kim Continues Expanding Nuclear Deterrence
The most recent launches have followed statements from the regime’s leader Kim, in which he emphasized that the fact that North Korea is a nuclear power cannot be undone.
In March, Kim made it clear that developing North Korea’s “self-defensive nuclear deterrent capacity” is vital to its national defense, thus implying that North Korea has no intention to go back to denuclearization talks despite international sanctions and pressures.
North Korean missile tests came after the country declared in early April that it had carried out a successful test of a cluster bomb warhead, and of an electromagnetic weaponry system, both of which are attached to a ballistic missile.
Although North Korea has been subjected to United Nations sanctions concerning its nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles since 2006, the country has been increasing its weaponry over the past several years. It has intensified its missile tests, submarine capacity, nuclear weapon capability, and military threats towards the United States and its allies.
Concerns Grow Over Advanced Weapons Development
According to the analysts, North Korea’s continued emphasis on cluster bomb missile systems and electromagnetic warfare points to the fact that the country is gearing up for a modern battlefield scenario rather than resorting only to nuclear threats.
The frequent launch comes at a time when tensions in the region have not been cooling down, especially with South Korea and the US increasing their joint military exercises as a response to North Korea’s growing weapons stockpile.
The military forces of South Korea did not give details about the distance of the missiles fired, nor any possible future launches.
