Buffy and Ted Lasso Star Anthony Head Dies
British actor Anthony Head, best known for playing Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Rupert Mannion in Ted Lasso, died on June 5, 2026, at the age of 72.
His daughters, actors Emily Head and Daisy Head, announced that he passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.
Head’s death marks the loss of one of Britain’s most recognizable television actors. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he became known to audiences on both sides of the Atlantic through popular television dramas, comedies, theater productions, and iconic advertising campaigns, helping make him a household name in the United Kingdom.
Who Was Anthony Head?
Anthony Stewart Head was born in London on Feb. 20, 1954, into a family connected to the entertainment industry. His father, Seafield Head, was a documentary filmmaker, while his mother, Helen Shingler, was an actor. His older brother, Murray Head, also pursued an acting career.
Head began his professional career in theater during the 1970s, appearing in productions including Godspell. He later performed in stage productions such as Chess, Peter Pan, and Rocky Horror Show Live.
Before becoming an international television star, Head gained widespread recognition in Britain through Nescafé Gold Blend coffee advertisements that aired from 1987 to 1993. Alongside actor Sharon Maughan, he played one half of the popular “Gold Blend couple,” whose coffee-fueled romance became a cultural phenomenon.
The Roles That Made Him Famous
Head achieved global fame in 1997 when he was cast as Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
As Buffy’s mentor, librarian, and father figure, Giles became one of the show’s most beloved characters during its seven-season run from 1997 to 2003. Head appeared in nearly every season and became closely associated with the cult-favorite supernatural drama.
In later years, he found a new generation of fans through Ted Lasso, where he portrayed Rupert Mannion, the wealthy and manipulative former owner of AFC Richmond. The role showcased a very different side of his acting abilities and introduced him to younger viewers.
His other notable television credits included Merlin, where he played King Uther Pendragon; Little Britain; Doctor Who; Motherland; Silent Witness; Manchild; Persuasion; and The Inbetweeners.
Head also portrayed Geoffrey Howe, the deputy to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, in the Oscar-winning film The Iron Lady.
How Did Anthony Head Die?
Head died from complications related to pneumonia, according to a statement released by his daughters.
“It has been, and forever will be, an honor and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many,” Emily and Daisy Head said in a statement reported by the BBC.
They added that he “passed away peacefully of complications due to pneumonia, surrounded by his family.”
In another family statement, they said: “Our grief is far greater than the hole he has left behind, but we know his legacy will live on, in the shows he was a part of, and in the audiences that love them.”
Tributes Highlight Lasting Legacy
Tributes quickly emerged from colleagues and fans following news of Head’s death.
Little Britain creator Matt Lucas remembered the actor as both talented and kind.
“When we were casting Little Britain, we were looking for a ‘Tony Head-type’, because we never imagined for a moment that the man himself would be interested, but he was,” Lucas wrote on X. “Lucky us. He was unfailingly brilliant, and always so kind and warm.”
Head is survived by his daughters, Emily and Daisy. His longtime partner, animal welfare activist Sarah Fisher, died in 2025.
From his memorable role as Giles in Buffy to his scene-stealing performances in Ted Lasso and countless British television productions, Anthony Head leaves behind a career that entertained audiences for generations.
