Area 51 Thermal Image Sparks Speculation Over Possible Secret U.S. Aircraft
The thermogram has been released near Area 51 in a way that has caused the aviation community, defense experts and online fanciers to speculate on the existence of a new aircraft design that doesn’t match anything known to the public.
The video was captured on June 2 by a YouTube channel called Project Fear, which has a history of filming abandoned places. The picture the group were given, a thermal image, suggested a tailless aircraft with cranked-kite wings and forward canards, flying close to the highly restricted Nevada test range.
Project Fear shared the photo on the social network X on June 3, labeling it “A craft the public has never seen before. The post was soon getting traction across Reddit and aviation forums, and defense-related social media feeds, with many people comparing it to the Boeing F-47, the U.S. Air Force’s future sixth-generation fighter in development.
The photo was then picked up by aviation observer Anders Otteson, who is behind the Uncanny Expeditions YouTube channel, who publicly claimed that the footage was real. In January 2026, Otteson had previously captured images of another unidentifiable aircraft in the same airspace.
Otteson, who previously gave advice on equipment for Project Fear, spoke on Reddit and confirmed that it was real footage. The clip is real and I have a copy of it still in my folder on my computer for months, but as an aside my only role in this channel was to be an advisor.
The Aviationist, which has been covering unusual sightings of aircraft near Area 51 for over 10 years, included the June 2 sighting in a composite image of credible sightings of unidentified aircraft around the facility. The update also noted that there was another report of a triangular aircraft spotted in the same area in January 2026.
The main focus has been on the apparent configuration of the aircraft. Fanciers of flying noted the presence of cranked-kite wings, that is, a wing whose leading edge is not swept back continuously, but rather is cranked. This setup is often linked with sophisticated stealth concepts as it can provide better aerodynamic efficiency while also minimizing radar visibility.
Forward canards were also suggested. These small control surfaces, in front of the main wing, can enhance the maneuverability of aircraft, but these control surfaces have been considered a difficult move for stealth designs because they can make the plane more visible on radar.
The picture has been protested as well. The round shape of the aircraft was reminiscent of fan-made F-47 renderings that have appeared on the Internet, some of which were members of the Secret Projects community who were against the plane on defense forums. Some wondered why there was no visible exhaust stack in the thermal image.
In response to those concerns, Otteson shared thermal images from a fighter that was known to be shot down under similar conditions. He said visible exhaust signatures would become invisible at long ranges due to imaging limitations, atmospheric conditions and features of the thermal sensors.
The furore grew, and questions arose over the authenticity of the image, with Project Fear releasing details of the equipment which was used to capture the footage.
Competing Theories Emerge
The “sighting” has sparked three main discussion points.
Other aviation and defense watchers were speculating that the aircraft might be linked to the U.S. Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance initiative. Boeing had won the contract for the development of the F-47 in 2026, and Pentagon officials have also confirmed that at least one prototype of the next generation fighter has already flown.
There is no public indication, however, that the aircraft in the thermal image is in relation to the NGAD program or to the actual F-47 aircraft in particular.
A second category, mostly among the UFO community, hypothesized that the observation might be related to the ongoing claims of Area 51 secret aerospace projects. Others mentioned the TR-3B, a triangular craft in UFO mythology, which to date has never been substantiated to be a program.
A third interpretation suggested that the flight may have been witnessed on purpose. A few members of the aviation defence forums mentioned that Area 51 is highly observed and authorities know that aviation spotters congregate around known observation points. There is no evidence of a planned disclosure campaign.
The U.S. Air Force did not comment. Boeing and the Department of Defense have not released any public comments on the image.
The debate is coinciding with renewed interest about classified aerospace programs by the government. In a report for The Wall Street Journal, it was revealed that in previous decades the DoD had been misinforming the public about UFOs to distract attention from sensitive aircraft development programs.
The review made mention of a case in the 80s, when fake images of flying saucers were released near Area 51 when the F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter was being tested. The incident was later investigated by the Pentagon’s All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office as part of its investigation of historical UFO sightings.
The June 2 image doesn’t conclusively identify the plane in question, but it has sparked renewed interest in the mysterious test flights and cutting-edge air programs that have been linked to Area 51 for years.
