Cockroach Janta Party Protest Highlights Youth Unemployment and Exam Leaks

The founder of India’s fast-growing Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Saturday led the first-ever street protest by the movement, which had gone viral on the Internet and now focuses on young unemployment and government accountability, among other issues.

Abhijeet Dipke, 30, who came to India from the U.S., went straight from the airport to the protest site where students had protested against the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan after the leaks in examination papers and allegations of errors in the marking process, the group said.

The protest marks another major step for a campaign that has accrued over 22 million followers on Instagram since it was launched in the middle of May. The quick growth rate is an indicator of job woes among young Indian citizens, and their trust in the recruitment and education system.

Youth Unemployment and Exam Concerns Drive Support

The movement’s success has been fuelled by problems faced by young Indians, especially job prospects, competitive exams. Government data shows that unemployment among youths aged 15 to 29 in India was almost 14% in April in urban areas.

India has 400 million working-age populations (15-29) which is one of the biggest challenges for the country in the context of job creation both from economic and social point of view. Economists have also commented that there are lots of educated young people working in low paid or vulnerable jobs that are not aligned to their skills.

Saturday’s protest was largely about the common problem of examination papers being leaked and marking disagreements which have had a significant impact on recruitment and admissions in recent years.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) reported that a total of over 2.3 million candidates had registered for NEET-UG 2024, the medical entrance examination. Issues with examination irregularities have led other test takers and opposition parties to question the integrity of high-stakes tests, as well as the integrity of the exam itself.

Government Accountability and Political Implications

The movement’s demands center on issues that directly affect younger voters, including employment opportunities, educational outcomes and institutional accountability.

According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey, youth unemployment stood at 10.2% during 2024-25, underscoring the political sensitivity of employment-related concerns.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party remained the largest party in Parliament after securing 240 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. However, employment and education continue to rank among the key issues influencing public discourse among younger Indians.

Dipke has said that hundreds of thousands of students joined the campaign within days of its launch. Data released by the group indicate that approximately 95% of its Instagram followers are based in India.

The movement’s X account was subsequently blocked in India. The decision has been challenged in court.

Movement Draws International Attention

The campaign has attracted attention beyond India because of its rapid growth on social media and the government’s response.

Before being blocked in India, the group’s X account had accumulated about 600,000 followers. Digital rights advocates have questioned the use of Section 69(A) of the Information Technology Act to restrict access to political content online.

According to data released by Dipke, the United States ranks among the largest overseas sources of followers after India, reflecting engagement from members of the Indian diaspora. International media coverage has also increased the movement’s visibility.

While the movement remains in its early stages, its emergence highlights the prominence of employment, education and cost-of-living concerns among young Indians. Whether it can sustain momentum beyond social media will depend on its ability to translate online support into broader civic engagement and continued public participation.

Saturday’s demonstration remained peaceful, and organizers said they plan to expand the campaign nationally in the coming months.
