Lucas Trejo: Argentine Soccer Star’s Wife and Children Found Dead After Three-Day Search Following Venezuela Earthquake

Argentine soccer player Lucas Trejo is grieving the heartbreaking loss of his wife and children after a 74-hour search for them in the aftermath of the Venezuela earthquakes ended in tragedy. Trejo, 38, had been holding onto hope that his missing wife and children would be found alive.

On Saturday night, a family friend and fellow soccer player, Edson Tortolero, confirmed that they had been found dead. Trejo’s Venezuelan club, Maritimo de la Guaira, said in a statement, saying: “Club Sport Maritimo La Guaira deeply mourns the loss suffered by Lucas Trejo’s family; we ask for respect for his relatives and teammates. After a 74-hour search, they were found deceased.”

Ending in Tragedy

Tortolero shared the heartbreaking update on social media at 7:47 p.m. on Saturday, writing: “We inform all the people of Venezuela and Argentina that the bodies of Lucas Trejo’s family members have been found lifeless. We thank everyone for the support and ask for the most sincere respect for his family at this time. WE PRAY FOR ETERNAL LIFE FOR THEM.'”

Trejo has not yet made a public statement. However, just hours before his family was found, he posted a photo of himself with his wife and children on his social media account.

Reports from Argentina said Trejo’s father and brother traveled to Venezuela to help search for his missing wife and children.

In April, his wife, Yana, shared a heartfelt birthday message for him, writing: “It’s a blessing for us as a family to have you and to move forward together in our shared purpose! With you, everything is always easier and more beautiful.”

Search and rescue teams have continued working around the clock since Wednesday’s powerful 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes, with nearly 70,000 people still reported missing.

Heartbreaking Updates Keep Coming

Earlier on Saturday, former Major League Baseball player Gorkys Hernandez revealed that his wife, Deisy, had also died in the disaster. Deisy was staying at a luxury hotel with family members of other players from Hernandez’s La Guaira Delfines baseball team when the earthquakes struck, according to reports from Venezuela.

“Queen of my life, you are and always will be the most beautiful, lovely, precious, the best woman in the world, the one who always found a way to lift me up in bad times,” Hernandez wrote on Saturday.

“You were and are the most beautiful woman in my life. You will always be with me, at every hour and in every moment. Fly high, my princess, my queen. May God have you in his glory and guide me to keep going and lift up our family.”

As of early Saturday evening, the death toll had reached 1,430.
