Jannik Sinner Battles Past Miomir Kecmanovic in Five Sets to Keep Wimbledon Title Defense Alive
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner survived a stern first-round examination from Miomir Kecmanovic on Monday, battling back to win a gripping five-set contest and keep his Wimbledon title defense alive.
The defending champion overcame an early setback to defeat the Serbian 4-6, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-3 on Centre Court, shaking off a lack of grass-court preparation, an awkward mid-match fall, and visible discomfort to book his place in the second round.
The victory marked Sinner’s first competitive match on grass this season following his surprise early exit at the French Open. It also carried historical significance, as the Italian recorded his 94th Grand Slam singles win, equaling Nicola Pietrangeli’s record for the most major match victories by an Italian player.
Kecmanovic, ranked outside the tournament favorites, made life uncomfortable for Sinner from the outset. The Serbian claimed the opening set with confident baseline play and refused to fade, edging a tense third-set tiebreak after Sinner squandered opportunities to move within a set of victory.
The contest grew even more dramatic midway through the match when Sinner slipped on the grass and later appeared to have blood on one of his shoes, prompting concern among spectators. Despite the scare, the four-time Grand Slam champion regained control in the fourth set, using his powerful serve and relentless groundstrokes to force a decider before pulling away late.
Sinner finished strongly, breaking Kecmanovic’s resistance in the fifth set to avoid what would have been one of the biggest upsets of the opening day at the All England Club.
The 24-year-old is attempting to become the first man since Roger Federer to successfully defend his maiden Wimbledon title. After lifting the trophy for the first time last year, Sinner arrived in London as the top seed despite having no competitive grass-court matches before the Championships.
He will next face Portugal’s Nuno Borges in the second round as he continues his bid for a second consecutive Wimbledon crown.
