Colombia booked the final place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Ghana 1-0 in Kansas City on Friday, with Jhon Arias’ early strike proving enough to send Los Cafeteros into a last-16 meeting with Switzerland.
Arias scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute, finishing off a well-worked move to cap another composed Colombian display. Despite creating numerous chances throughout the contest, Colombia were unable to extend their advantage but remained in complete control against a Ghana side that struggled to trouble goalkeeper Camilo Vargas.
The South Americans dominated possession and dictated the tempo from the opening whistle. Colombia finished with 54% possession while completing 540 of 598 passes at an impressive 91% accuracy, compared to Ghana’s 329 completed passes at 83%.
Néstor Lorenzo’s side consistently created openings in the final third, registering 20 shots to Ghana’s eight and forcing seven saves from goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. Colombia placed eight efforts on target, while Ghana failed to register a single shot on target across the 90 minutes.
Much of Colombia’s attacking threat came through the flanks, with Daniel Muñoz and Johan Mojica providing width as Luis Díaz stretched Ghana’s defence. Arias’ intelligent movement between the lines repeatedly caused problems, while Jefferson Lerma controlled midfield to prevent Ghana from launching meaningful counter-attacks.
Although Ghana remained disciplined defensively for long spells, they rarely looked capable of finding an equaliser. The Black Stars managed just one attempt from inside the penalty area and completed only three defensive line breaks throughout the match, highlighting Colombia’s defensive organisation.
Colombia also held the edge in territorial dominance, recording 42 entries into the attacking channels compared to Ghana’s 23, while completing 110 line breaks to Ghana’s 90. They earned three corners, created several dangerous crossing opportunities, and controlled proceedings despite Ghana applying greater pressing intensity.
The narrow scoreline arguably flattered Ghana, with Colombia repeatedly threatening to double their lead through Díaz, James Rodríguez and substitute attackers in the second half. However, Ghana goalkeeper Asare produced several important saves to keep his side within touching distance until the final whistle.
The victory extends Colombia’s unbeaten run at the tournament and confirms their place in the Round of 16, where they will meet Switzerland in Vancouver. Having conceded few clear chances throughout the competition while continuing to create opportunities at the other end, Lorenzo’s side will head into the knockout clash full of confidence.
For Ghana, the defeat ends an encouraging World Cup campaign. Despite showing resilience throughout the tournament, the Black Stars were unable to match Colombia’s technical quality and attacking fluidity as their journey came to an end.
