D.C.’s Fourth Of July Parade Canceled Due To Extreme Heat
Triple digit temperatures in Washington, D.C. have forced organizers to cancel the annual Independence Day parade.
“The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the District of Columbia, with heat index values expected to reach between 110°F and 115°F,” organizers said.
“This decision was made after extensive consultation with the National Park Service, the District of Columbia City Government, and Freedom 250, and careful consideration of the safety of our participants, spectators, and staff as the top priority.”
The parade takes place around the National Mall, although it is organized separately from Freedom 250, the Trump-linked organization that has organized events like the Great American State Fair and Saturday’s Salute to America.
The Salute to America event, with heavy security, is opening the grounds near the Washington Monument later in the day, due to the heat. The State Fair also is opening later on Saturday, at noon. Donald Trump is still scheduled to speak at 9:45 p.m. ET, followed by fireworks. Forecasters are waring of scattered storms in the early evening.
Another July 4th tradition — the reading of the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives — has been moved indoors.
One tradition did carry on: A Capitol Fourth, the annual concert on the west lawn of the Capitol.
