Why Beyoncé Dropped ‘Morning Dew (Donk)’ Now

Beyoncé surprised fans with her first new music in more than two years on Independence Day, releasing Morning Dew (Donk) as she begins the countdown to a milestone anniversary in her solo career.

The unexpected release not only revives an unreleased track from more than a decade ago but also sets the stage for a special edition of one of her most influential albums.

Beyoncé Revives Lost Track

Beyoncé released Morning Dew (Donk) across streaming platforms on July 4, marking her first new song since the release of Cowboy Carter in March 2024.

The surprise drop came without an extended promotional campaign, giving fans an unexpected holiday gift while signaling the beginning of a new chapter in her ongoing musical trilogy.

The song is a reworked version of Donk, an unreleased recording from 2013 that later surfaced online through unofficial leaks. Rather than simply releasing the original version, Beyoncé revisited the track, updating it for an official release with longtime collaborators Pharrell Williams, The-Dream, and Darius Dixon. Williams also shares production credits with the singer.

Why Beyoncé Dropped It Now

The release is more than just a standalone single. According to Parkwood Entertainment, Morning Dew (Donk) launches a 60-day countdown to September 4, when Beyoncé celebrates her 45th birthday and the 20th anniversary of B’Day, her landmark second solo album.

The newly released track will appear on the anniversary edition of B’Day, although additional details about the expanded project have not yet been announced.

A lyric video featuring archival footage from earlier in Beyoncé’s career, directed by longtime collaborator Cliff Watts, accompanied the release and reinforces the retrospective theme surrounding the anniversary celebration.

The Album That Changed Everything

Released in September 2006, B’Day became one of the defining albums of Beyoncé’s solo career. The record debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and produced several of her biggest hits, including Déjà Vu, Ring the Alarm, Irreplaceable and Upgrade U.

The anniversary reissue celebrates an album that helped establish Beyoncé as one of pop music’s dominant solo artists while introducing a new generation of listeners to one of the most influential records of the 2000s.

The Trilogy Isn’t Over

While Morning Dew (Donk) marks Beyoncé’s first new release in more than two years, it also renews speculation about her next full-length project. Renaissance and Cowboy Carter were introduced as the first two installments of a planned trilogy, but the third album has yet to be announced.

Until then, the surprise release serves as both a celebration of her musical legacy and a bridge toward whatever comes next in her evolving career.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
As we sip champagne, watchin’ Purple Rain
Body’s insane, how could you complain?
Plus I know you love my personality (Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’)
I think I wanna go back to school and have my locker full of pictures of you
So give me that “A” in biology, I’m graduatin’ soon (Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’; Mmm)

[Refrain]
It’s something ’bout that look you give me
Makin’ me feel that young love inside (Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’; Mmm)
It’s something ’bout that feeling you give me
I can’t resist them butterflies (Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’; Mmm)
You need a woman holdin’ you down
Whenever, wherever, however, whatever
I’ll be right by your side
See, I just wanna love you
Boy, if you don’t mind
Just kickin’ this little game of mine, and he said

[Pre-Chorus]
Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’
Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’
Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’

Kickin’ this little game of mine, and he said (Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’)

[Chorus]
Girl, you sexy in the mornin’
You know you turn me on, babe
You know the sun rise for you (For you)
Give me that mornin’ dew (Mornin’ dew)
You know that I want it (I want it)
I want you moanin’ every mornin’ (Oh)
You know the sun rise for you
Give me that mornin’ dew (Mornin’ dew)
Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’
Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’
Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’
(Give me that mornin’ dew)
Donkey, donkey, donk’

[Verse 2]
Ah, I get so excited when I feel you touch my thighs (Touch my thighs)
Baby, slow down ’cause I’ma be late for my ride (I wanna ride, I wanna ride)
I’m feelin’ faded out my mind, a little morning dew
There’s a river inside that flows from our love
You can tap in but don’t, don’t tap out, oh
It’s a slip in the slide, that front to back love
Right there baby, don’t tap out, tap out

[Refrain]
It’s something ’bout that look you give me
Makin’ me feel that young love inside (Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’; Mmm)
It’s something ’bout that feeling you give me
I can’t resist them butterflies (Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’; Mmm)
You need a woman holdin’ you down
Whenever, wherever, however, whatever
I’ll be right by your side
See, I just wanna love you
Boy, if you don’t mind
Just kickin’ this little game of mine, and he said

[Pre-Chorus]
Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’
Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’
Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’

Kickin’ this little game of mine, and he said (Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’)

[Chorus]
Girl, you sexy in the mornin’
You know you turn me on, babe
You know the sun rise for you (For you)
Give me that mornin’ dew (Mornin’ dew)
You know that I want it (I want it)
I want you moanin’ every mornin’ (Oh)
You know the sun rise for you
Give me that mornin’ dew (Mornin’ dew)
Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’
Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’
Donkey, donkey, donkey, donkey, donk’
(Give me that mornin’ dew)
Donkey, donkey, donk’
