Three people charged with damaging reflecting pool identified: what to know

Three people are facing misdemeanor charges after allegedly damaging the newly renovated Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

Sophie Dennison-Gibby, 49, Justin Carreno, 47, and Cameron Thiers, 26, were detained between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on June 20 after officers allegedly saw them peeling and removing sections of blue coating from the Reflecting Pool, The New York Times first reported.

The three are each charged with misdemeanor destruction of property, involving alleged damage valued at less than $1,000. If convicted, they face a maximum penalty of 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

The charges are separate from the felony case against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, who has been accused of causing more extensive damage to the pool. He has denied the allegations.

The Reflecting Pool became a political flashpoint after President Donald Trump publicly criticized its condition and pushed for a major restoration project. The National Park Service completed a multimillion-dollar restoration earlier this year, but the site has since seen algae reappear and has been the focus of repeated alleged vandalism incidents.
