Nolan Wells Update: Parents Challenge Friends’ Account After Missing Snapchat Posts Raise New Questions

The mystery surrounding the disappearance and death of 18-year-old Mississippi student-athlete Nolan Wells has taken another dramatic turn after his parents publicly challenged the account given by the friends who were with him on Horn Island, saying key details simply “don’t add up.”

Speaking publicly for the first time, Christine and Elmore Wonsley rejected claims that their son voluntarily chose to stay behind on the remote Mississippi barrier island while his friends returned to the mainland following a Fourth of July outing.

Their comments come as investigators continue examining newly surfaced video footage allegedly recorded near the area where Wells was last seen, while civil rights attorney Ben Crump raises fresh questions about missing phone evidence, conflicting witness statements and the timeline of the case.

Authorities have not announced any criminal charges, and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office has said the investigation remains active.

Parents Say Nolan Would Never Have Stayed Behind

One of the central claims made by Wells’ friends is that the 18-year-old decided to remain on Horn Island with a young woman while the rest of the group left. His parents say they find that explanation impossible to believe.

“I don’t know why he would,” Elmore Wonsley, Nolan’s father, told Good Morning America about the claims that his son decided to stay behind on Horn Island while his friends returned to the mainland.

“We always taught him that if you go with a group you stay with a group. Even when he was in college, he would say, ‘Dad we’re going to ride down to a party in another city.’

“I’d tell him, you go with five you come back with five. Do not separate from the group… I always say safety is in numbers, and he would say, ‘Yes, sir.'” His mother echoed that disbelief. “I can’t fathom why he would.”

Christine said Nolan had visited Horn Island several times before and always contacted his family once he safely returned. “But this time there was no call or text from him. It was from his friend,” she said.

Missing Snapchat Activity Raises More Questions

Another detail troubling Wells’ family is what they found and didn’t find on his phone.

Christine said she was eventually able to recover Nolan’s phone after tracking it through the Life360 app. According to the family, friends retrieved the device from one of Nolan’s companions, Warren. “It wasn’t like they said, we got Nolan’s friend. [The parents] went and tracked it,” attorney Ben Crump said.

After accessing the phone, Christine said something immediately stood out. Despite being on a holiday boat trip with friends, no Snapchat photos or videos were documenting the outing.

“Me and my sister went through the phone, we went in his Snapchat, he had two accounts, absolutely nothing,” Christine said. “It wasn’t even 24 hours, which is how long pictures and videos stay in Snapchat. And I was like that can’t be.

“I’ve seen Nolan, whenever he Snaps, when he goes and he’s having fun, he does videos. There was absolutely nothing. No saved videos, and even my sister is like yeah that’s suspicious.”

Ben Crump Points to Contradictions

Representing Wells’ family, attorney Ben Crump says witness accounts given by members of the group are inconsistent.

According to Crump, one young woman reportedly told investigators Nolan planned to return to the boat with his friends, contradicting claims that he intended to remain on the island. “The fact that they said Nolan was talking to a young woman and she said that he said, ‘I’m going back to get on the boat with the boys,'” Crump said. “The boys said he was going to stay with her. That’s an obvious contradiction.”

Crump also disclosed what he described as previously unknown details from an alleged video recorded around the time of Wells’ disappearance. “This video, you can hear an argument going where Nolan is saying, ‘Give me back my freaking phone. What are you freaking doing,'” the attorney claimed.

“And then his phone ends up missing. I don’t know any teenager, who says, if you believe that story, I’m going to stay behind. I’m going to leave my phone. I mean, no young person leaves their cell phone.”

Crump also questioned the timeline surrounding the recovery of the body believed to be Wells. “Why didn’t his body wash up with the tide on Sunday. Why would it come on Monday? It’s not adding up. That is the problem when you think about the history of Mississippi,” he added.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed the claims made by Crump.

Investigators Reviewing Viral Horn Island Video

Meanwhile, investigators have confirmed they are reviewing a video circulating on social media that was allegedly recorded on Horn Island on the day Wells disappeared.

Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said authorities are aware of the footage, which was posted on Facebook by a person claiming they were near the boat Wells had been traveling on.

The individual wrote: “We were parked right next to the boat Nolan was allegedly on.”

“Hope this helps in any way. This was immediately after the big fight that broke out up on the shore.” The poster added they could not confirm whether Wells appears in the footage but encouraged others to examine it frame by frame. “I’m not sure if this is Nolan, but it could be.”

The video appears to show a crowd gathered along the shoreline looking toward a disturbance, though investigators have not confirmed whether it is connected to Wells’ disappearance or whether the person seen in the footage is Wells.

As speculation continues to grow online, authorities have urged the public not to conclude unverified social media claims while the investigation remains ongoing.

For Wells’ family, however, unanswered questions continue to mount, from the conflicting witness accounts to the missing phone evidence and the viral video now under review. With investigators still piecing together Nolan Wells’ final hours, his parents say they remain determined to learn exactly what happened on Horn Island.
