Belgium confident of shocking Spain in quarter-final
Belgium are embracing their status as underdogs ahead of Friday’s FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final against Spain, with head coach Rudi Garcia insisting his side has the quality and belief to eliminate one of the tournament favourites.
Spain arrive at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles unbeaten and yet to concede a goal in the competition, having combined defensive solidity with their trademark possession-based football. Led by teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, the reigning European champions have been among the standout teams of the tournament.
Belgium, however, believe their resurgence after a difficult group stage has put them in a position to challenge Spain for a place in the semi-finals.
“We believe we can pull off an upset, and we will do everything we can to make it happen,” Garcia said, according to Reuters.
The Belgian coach highlighted his team’s attacking output as a reason for optimism. Belgium have scored 13 goals during the tournament, second only to France, while their 107 shots also rank among the competition’s highest. Their knockout campaign began with an extra-time victory over Senegal before a commanding 4-1 win against co-hosts the United States secured a place in the last eight.
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois echoed his coach’s confidence despite Spain’s impressive form.
“Everyone on our team realises it’s possible,” Courtois said ahead of the quarter-final, adding that Belgium have found their rhythm at the right time.
Spain coach Luis de la Fuente acknowledged Belgium’s attacking quality but said his side would remain focused on maintaining the defensive discipline that has underpinned their run to the quarter-finals. Spain have yet to concede in the tournament, with their organized back line complemented by midfield control and the creativity of Yamal in attack.
Friday’s tie could represent one of the final opportunities for Belgium’s experienced core to make another deep World Cup run.
With Romelu Lukaku, Kevin De Bruyne and Courtois leading the squad, the Red Devils are hoping to replicate the famous 2018 quarter-final victory over Brazil and return to the tournament’s last four. The winner of the clash will face France, who booked their semi-final place with a 2-0 victory over Morocco on Thursday.
