Lindsey Graham’s relationship with Donald Trump, explained
President Donald Trump posted an emotional tribute to Senator Lindsey Graham following the South Carolina Republican‘s death, describing him as “one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known” and “a true American Patriot.”
The warm words marked a remarkable evolution in a tumultuous relationship that was once openly hostile.
Graham died aged 71 Saturday evening following a “brief and sudden illness.”
Over the past decade, Graham went from being one of Trump’s sharpest Republican critics to one of his closest allies. He briefly broke with him after the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, and ultimately rebuilt the alliance before Trump’s return to the White House.

From Fierce Critic to Political Rival
During the 2016 Republican presidential primary, Graham was among Trump’s most outspoken Republican opponents, who cautioned the GOP against embracing him, and publicly feuded with him.
He repeatedly warned that Trump would damage the Republican Party and publicly attacked his candidacy, famously calling him a “jackass.” The pair traded personal insults throughout the campaign, culminating in one of the race’s most memorable moments when Trump read Graham’s personal cellphone number aloud during a rally.
The episode highlighted how far apart the two Republicans appeared at the time. Graham argued that the party risked embracing a candidate who did not represent traditional conservative values, while Trump dismissed Graham as part of the political establishment.
Few Republicans appeared further from Trump’s political orbit than Graham during the early stages of the 2016 campaign.
One of Trump’s Closest Allies
After Trump won the presidency, however, Graham’s relationship with the new president changed dramatically.
The two found common ground on judicial appointments, national security and foreign policy, with Graham becoming one of Trump’s most reliable allies in the Senate. He became a frequent White House visitor, a regular golf partner and a public defender of the president during some of his biggest political battles.
Graham strongly backed Trump’s judicial nominees, including his Supreme Court picks, and became one of the president’s most prominent supporters during both impeachment proceedings. As other Republicans occasionally distanced themselves from Trump, Graham often defended him in television interviews and on Capitol Hill.
The shift from critic to ally became one of the clearest examples of Trump’s ability to reshape relationships within the Republican Party.
January 6 Tested The Alliance
The relationship reached its lowest point after the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Speaking on the Senate floor as Congress certified Joe Biden’s election victory, Graham publicly broke with Trump, declaring: “Count me out. Enough is enough.”
He argued that Biden’s victory should be accepted and criticized Trump’s efforts to challenge the election results. At the time, Graham said the events at the Capitol had crossed a line and suggested that the alliance between the two men had reached its breaking point.
The moment showed that, despite years of close cooperation, Graham was willing to publicly distance himself from Trump when he believed the situation had gone too far.
Rebuilding The Partnership
The break proved temporary. Graham later resumed close contact with Trump, and the two rebuilt their political partnership as Republicans prepared for future elections.
The senator again became one of Trump’s most trusted congressional allies, working with him on Republican strategy, foreign policy and legislative priorities. Graham remained a vocal supporter of Trump’s campaigns and continued to defend many of the former president’s policies.
By the time Trump returned to the White House, Graham had re-established himself as one of the administration’s closest allies on Capitol Hill.
A Relationship That Came Full Circle
Trump’s tribute following Graham’s death underlines how completely the two men had repaired their relationship after years of political clashes.
