Mike Browning Dead at 62: Death Metal Legend and Nocturnus Founder Remembered

Mike Browning, the drummer and vocalist who co-founded the pioneering death metal band Morbid Angel, died July 13, 2026, at 62, according to a statement from his record label. Browning also fronted Nocturnus and its later incarnation, Nocturnus AD, over a four-decade career in extreme metal.

Browning’s record label confirmed his death in a social media statement, calling him a “death metal legend” and “sci-fi death metal godfather.” His former band posted its own tribute, thanking him for “helping to make all this happen” and extending condolences to his family, including his teenage daughter.

Browning co-founded Morbid Angel in 1983 in Tampa, Florida, with guitarist Trey Azagthoth, a partnership formed, in Browning’s own telling, from a past interview, because the pair were “the only two kids in that school that were into the occult.” He served as the band’s drummer and vocalist from 1984 to 1986, playing on what became “Abominations of Desolation,” an album not released until 1991. He took up drums at 13, citing early influences including Black Sabbath, Slayer and Celtic Frost, before discovering the extreme metal bands that reshaped his musical direction. His departure from Morbid Angel in 1986 followed tension with Azagthoth, according to Browning’s own past accounts, though the two reconciled enough in later years for the band to publicly honor him after his death. Nocturnus, the band Browning founded afterward, is often cited by genre historians as one of the first death metal acts to fold synthesizers and speculative-fiction storytelling into its records, an approach that influenced later experimental strains of extreme metal. Away from music, Browning lived in Tampa, where he kept a collection of medieval weapons and Ancient Egyptian artifacts alongside interests in muscle cars and 3D graphic design.
