Nolan Wells Update: Mom Says Family Can’t Properly Grieve as Emotional Video Offers Heartbreaking Update
The mother of Nolan Wells shared an emotional new message about the devastating loss of her 18-year-old son, saying her family has not yet been able to fully mourn because they remain focused on finding answers about the circumstances surrounding his death.
In a tearful Instagram video posted this week, Christine Wonsley described the pain of losing her son as “unsurmountable,” saying the emotional burden has left her feeling as though “an elephant” is sitting on her chest.
Her remarks come as the investigation into Wells’ death remains active and his family continues pushing for a transparent review of the case.
Wells, a freshman football player at Southwest Mississippi Community College, disappeared during a Fourth of July boating trip to Horn Island, a barrier island off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.
He was reported missing on the night of July 4 after he did not return to the mainland with the rest of his group.
His body was recovered near the island two days later and was later identified through dental records. Authorities have not yet released an official cause or manner of death, and toxicology results are still pending.
“I’m just here to tell you that this is the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Wonsley said in the video. “My heart will never be whole again.”
Despite her family’s heartbreak, Wonsley said they have been unable to grieve in the way they want because they remain consumed by the search for answers.
“We haven’t really had an opportunity to grieve because we’ve been fighting,” she said, explaining that she believes continuing to tell Nolan’s story is what her “son would have wanted.”
The investigation has drawn national attention as Wells’ family questions aspects of the official timeline and has commissioned an independent autopsy through attorney Ben Crump while awaiting the state’s final forensic findings.
The family has also met with the Jackson County District Attorney, who is expected to present the case to a grand jury once the sheriff’s investigation is complete.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter has said investigators have found no evidence of foul play at this stage but stressed that the investigation remains active.
Authorities have continued asking anyone with original photos, videos or eyewitness accounts from Horn Island on July 4 to come forward.
In another recent development, the FBI confirmed it is assisting the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office by investigating threats made against individuals connected to the case, while local authorities continue leading the death investigation.
Funeral services for Wells are scheduled for July 20 in Ocean Springs, where family members plan to celebrate his life in what Wonsley has described as a “home-going celebration” rather than simply a day of mourning.
