Tate Brothers arrested in Miami after new UK rape charges
Social media influencer Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan Tate were arrested in Miami on Saturday after British prosecutors announced a new series of criminal charges and sought their extradition to the United Kingdom.
The brothers, who have amassed millions of followers online through content promoting misogynistic views, were arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service in Miami on Saturday, agency spokesperson Brady McCarron told The Associated Press (AP).
The arrests came after the U.K.’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it had authorized additional charges against the brothers involving four further alleged victims and requested their extradition from the United States.
In a statement published Sunday, the CPS said Andrew Tate, 39, faces seven additional counts of rape, three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and 19 charges related to indecent images of a child and extreme pornography.
Tristan Tate, 38, faces one count of sexual assault, two counts of rape and three counts of arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation. The alleged offenses occurred between July 2010 and August 2017. The new charges bring the total number of alleged victims up to seven.
The Tates, who hold dual U.S. and British citizenship have previously denied any wrongdoing. After their arrest, Joseph McBride, a lawyer who represents them, told the BBC “the world knows Andrew and Tristan are innocent.”
Newsweek has contacted the U.S. Marshals Service and an attorney representing Andrew and Tristan Tate for comment.
Malcolm McHaffie, Head of the Special Crime Division at the Crown Prosecution Service, said in a release: “We have decided to prosecute Andrew and Tristan Tate for further offences including rape, arranging or facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation and offences relating to indecent images of a child.
The CPS said the new charging decisions followed receipt of a further file of evidence from Bedfordshire Police.
The brothers were already facing charges in the U.K.related to three other alleged victims. According to the CPS, Andrew Tate previously faced 10 charges, including rape, actual bodily harm, human trafficking and controlling prostitution for gain, while Tristan Tate previously faced 11 charges, including rape, actual bodily harm and human trafficking.
The Tate brothers, former kickboxers who transformed themselves into global online influencers, have become some of the internet’s most polarizing figures. Through videos, podcasts, and social media campaigns centered on wealth, masculinity, relationships and gender politics, they have built a vast following while also attracting widespread condemnation from critics, advocacy groups and educators. They have been accused of promoting misogynistic views, reinforcing harmful stereotypes about women and normalizing attitudes that many argue contribute to a culture of hostility and inequality.
Andrew Tate first gained widespread public attention in 2016 as a contestant on the U.K. reality television series Big Brother. He was removed from the show after a video emerged that appeared to show him striking a woman, an incident he said was part of a consensual act and which he has denied was abusive.
British authorities have been seeking the brothers’ return to the U.K. for more than two years. In 2024, Bedfordshire Police obtained European arrest warrants to extradite them from Romania, where they were living while facing separate criminal proceedings.
The brothers suffered a setback in June when a court rejected their attempt to learn the identities of their U.K. accusers, ruling that prosecutors could keep the alleged victims’ names confidential until formal legal proceedings begin.
The brothers are expected to appear in federal court in Miami early next week, the AP reported, citing a person familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case publicly.
