NOAA Hurricane Satellite Back Online


NOAA‘s primary hurricane-monitoring satellite has returned to normal operations after a brief technical outage that temporarily sidelined one of the agency’s most important forecasting tools during the Atlantic hurricane season.

The GOES-19 satellite, positioned as GOES-East, entered a protective ‘safe hold’ mode on July 15 following an unexpected technical anomaly. While the interruption lasted less than a day, backup systems ensured forecasters continued monitoring weather conditions across the Atlantic basin.

Why Did GOES-19 Go Offline?

According to NOAA’s Office of Satellite Operations, GOES-19 entered safe hold at around 5 p.m. EDT on July 15 after engineers detected an unspecified technical anomaly.

Safe hold is an automated protective mode designed to safeguard spacecraft when unexpected issues arise. During this process, the satellite temporarily suspends non-essential operations while engineers investigate the problem and restore normal functionality.

NOAA has not disclosed what triggered the anomaly.

When Was the Satellite Restored?

GOES-19 resumed transmitting data at approximately 11:30 a.m. Central time on July 16, roughly 18 hours after the outage began.

Recovery efforts continued into July 17 as NOAA gradually restored additional instruments. By the afternoon, the agency confirmed that GOES-East imagery was once again being delivered through its public platforms, although some secondary instruments, including the Geostationary Lightning Mapper and Solar Ultraviolet Imager, were still being brought back online.

Why Is GOES-19 Important?

GOES-19 serves as NOAA’s primary satellite for monitoring hurricanes and tropical weather across the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico.

The satellite provides high-resolution imagery every five minutes under normal operations, allowing meteorologists to monitor tropical waves, thunderstorms, lightning activity, ocean temperatures, and wildfire smoke in near real time.

Its data plays a key role in forecasting hurricane development and supporting the National Hurricane Center’s storm analysis.

Backup Systems Continued Monitoring Storms

Despite the temporary outage, weather forecasting operations continued without major disruption.

NOAA maintained coverage using backup satellite GOES-16 alongside its broader observation network, which includes Doppler radar, weather balloons, surface observations, hurricane hunter aircraft, and numerical weather models.

Although GOES-16 can assume GOES-East’s operational role if necessary, permanently repositioning the satellite would take weeks. Because the outage was brief, NOAA relied on existing backup capabilities instead.

Outage Coincided With Atlantic Disturbances

The interruption occurred while the National Hurricane Center was monitoring two tropical disturbances, one in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico and another in the far eastern Atlantic.

Neither system showed a high likelihood of developing into a tropical cyclone during the outage, and forecasters said the temporary loss of GOES-19 imagery did not significantly affect monitoring efforts.

With GOES-19 now restored, NOAA has resumed normal satellite operations as the Atlantic hurricane season continues. Engineers are expected to complete the restoration of the remaining onboard instruments while continuing to investigate the cause of the technical anomaly.
