The world’s most prestigious award in mathematics has been awarded to four outstanding young researchers whose work is advancing fields ranging from geometry and number theory to physics and computer science.

At the opening ceremony of the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Philadelphia on July 23, the International Mathematical Union (IMU) announced the recipients of the 2026 Fields Medal: Yu Deng of the University of Chicago, John Pardon of Stony Brook University, Jacob Tsimerman of the University of Toronto, and Hong Wang of New York University and France’s Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES).

Often called the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics,” the Fields Medal is awarded every four years to mathematicians under the age of 40 in recognition of exceptional achievements and future promise.

Who Won the Fields Medal 2026?

This year’s winners represent three countries and four major areas of mathematical research. Chinese mathematician Yu Deng was honored for groundbreaking work in partial differential equations, including a major advance in deriving the Boltzmann equation, a fundamental equation in physics that describes the behavior of gases.

American mathematician John Pardon received the award for his contributions to symplectic geometry and topology, including his proof of the long-standing MNOP conjecture, which has implications for geometry and theoretical physics. Canadian mathematician Jacob Tsimerman was recognized for extending powerful mathematical techniques into number theory and algebraic geometry, producing results closely connected to the famous Hodge Conjecture, one of mathematics’ Millennium Prize Problems.

Chinese mathematician Hong Wang earned the medal for solving the three-dimensional version of the century-old Kakeya problem, a breakthrough in harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory with wide-ranging applications. Each winner receives 15,000 Canadian dollars (about US$10,600) and a gold medal featuring the image of the ancient Greek mathematician Archimedes.

What Is the Fields Medal?

First awarded in 1936, the Fields Medal is presented every four years during the International Congress of Mathematicians. Unlike the Nobel Prize, only mathematicians under the age of 40 are eligible, reflecting the award’s emphasis on both outstanding accomplishments and future potential. Alongside the Fields Medals, the IMU also announced several other major prizes. Shayan Oveis Gharan of the University of Washington received the Abacus Medal for contributions to theoretical computer science. Graeme Segal of the University of Oxford won the Chern Medal for lifetime achievement in mathematics, while Yurii Nesterov of Belgium’s University of Louvain received the Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize for mathematical work with significant real-world applications. Mathematician and broadcaster Hannah Fry was honored with the Leelavati Prize for excellence in public outreach.

Although highly theoretical, the work of this year’s Fields Medalists has applications across physics, geometry, data science, cryptography and advanced computing. IMU President Hiraku Nakajima said the four winners “exemplify the depth, originality and vitality of contemporary mathematics.” As the 2026 ICM continues through July 30, the achievements of Yu Deng, John Pardon, Jacob Tsimerman and Hong Wang highlight the growing impact of mathematics in solving some of science’s most challenging problems while inspiring the next generation of researchers.
