Death of Chinese Girl After Experimental Gene-Editing Therapy Raises Safety Questions
A six-year-old girl in China has become the center of a growing international debate over the safety of experimental gene-editing therapies, after reports revealed she died just days after receiving what is believed to be the world’s first brain-targeted gene-editing treatment.
Investigations by Science and Retraction Watch say the child identified only as Mei died from a severe immune reaction seven days after undergoing the pioneering procedure in 2025. The reports also allege that her death was never publicly disclosed, raising fresh questions about transparency, medical ethics, and oversight in cutting-edge genetic research.
According to the investigation, Mei died after developing a serious immune reaction following the experimental treatment. However, researchers and health authorities have not publicly released a full, detailed investigation that clearly spells out exactly how the treatment may have led to her death.
Reports from Science and Retraction Watch say the incident remained undisclosed while related scientific papers continued to be published. That has intensified scrutiny of how experimental gene-editing trials are monitored, reported, and regulated, especially when something goes terribly wrong.
What Happened to Mei?
Mei was born with Snijders-Blok-Campeau syndrome, a rare genetic disorder linked to developmental delays. For families like hers, treatment options are extremely limited. In 2025, she became the first known patient to receive an experimental brain-directed gene-editing therapy at Xinhua Hospital in Shanghai, in a trial led by neuroscientist Zilong Qiu.
Her parents reportedly raised about $860,000 to help fund the treatment, hoping it might finally improve her condition after conventional therapies had done little. For them, this experimental procedure represented a last, fragile hope. But just seven days after receiving the therapy, Mei died. Investigators say she suffered a severe immune reaction, turning a moment of hope into a devastating tragedy.
What Kind of Gene-Editing Therapy Did She Receive?
The treatment reportedly used base editing, an advanced form of CRISPR gene editing. Traditional CRISPR tools work like molecular scissors, cutting both strands of DNA to remove or repair sections. Base editing, by contrast, aims to change individual “letters” of DNA without making those full cuts. Scientists believe this approach may allow them to correct disease-causing mutations more precisely and with fewer side effects.
Because Mei’s condition affected brain development, researchers tried to deliver the therapy directly to her nervous system. This made her procedure unlike anything previously attempted in humans.
Mei’s death has become a flashpoint in the debate over “first-in-human” experimental treatments, especially when they involve children with rare, life-threatening conditions and few, if any, alternatives.
According to Science, the clinical trial record for Mei’s treatment had not been updated after her death. A later paper in Nature describing animal research related to the same work also reportedly did not mention the fatal outcome in the human trial. If those omissions are confirmed, they could fuel demands for stricter reporting rules, stronger protections for vulnerable patients, and tougher independent oversight of experimental genetic medicine.
