The Houston Rockets might have found one of their more intriguing young pieces in Bruce Thornton. The 2026 NBA season could be his first real chance to start proving that he belongs, right now, in the league.
The 31st overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft didn’t waste much time introducing himself. During Summer League, Thornton looked comfortable running the floor, creating his own offense, and playing with the kind of confidence that tends to make coaches take notice. He averaged 18.6 points and 4.4 assists, numbers that are nice on paper, but it was the way he carried himself that stood out.
There wasn’t much hesitation in his game. Thornton played like someone who believed he belonged, which sounds simple, but for young guards entering the NBA, that adjustment can be a hard one. The speed is different. The defenders are stronger. The windows that looked wide open in college suddenly disappear.

Thornton’s challenge now is proving that Summer League wasn’t just a fun July stretch where everything clicked. Plenty of players have had a hot week and then discovered the regular season is a completely different animal. The good news for Houston is that he already showed some of the traits that are harder to teach: patience, confidence and the ability to make plays without looking overwhelmed.
Of course, he’s not the only young guard the Rockets are watching. Reed Sheppard remains an important part of the team’s future plans, and his development will be worth following as well. But Thornton enters this season with a little less pressure and a lot of room to surprise people.
