Meijer slash prices on more than 1,000 items: list of biggest savings

Meijer has announced price cuts on more than 1,000 grocery and household products through September 8, offering discounts across categories including meat, produce, cereal, snacks and household essentials. The six-week promotion is available in stores, online and through the retailer’s app, with no coupons or special memberships required.

“Midwesterners work hard for their money, and we believe they shouldn’t have to work equally as hard to save money on their groceries,” said Don Sanderson, chief merchandising & marketing officer at Meijer. “We’re proud of the value we offer customers 365 days a year and this is our way of saying thank you as families make the most of the last few weeks of summer.”

The move makes Meijer the latest major grocery chain to roll out a large-scale discount campaign as retailers compete for budget-conscious shoppers.

Which Grocery Items Are Getting Cheaper?

Some of the biggest discounts are on fresh foods.

In the produce department, 16-ounce containers of strawberries have fallen from $2.99 to $2.50, while whole seedless watermelons have been reduced from $8.99 to $4.99.

Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes cereal has been cut from $4.29 to $2.99, while 24-ounce jars of Vlasic pickles are now $2.50 instead of $3.49.

Meijer said the discounts are part of a rotating selection of more than 1,000 products spanning hundreds of categories, meaning additional items will be added throughout the promotion.

Meat, Produce and Pantry Staples Lead the Biggest Savings

Among the standout reductions are meat products, with a whole pork shoulder butt roast reduced to $1.79 per pound from $2.99, while family-pack chicken drumsticks are now 99 cents per pound, down from $1.39.

Discounts extend beyond groceries too. Meijer Soft & Strong 18 Mega Roll toilet paper is now priced at $10.49, down from $13.99.

Rather than focusing on a handful of loss-leader products, Meijer said the campaign covers hundreds of categories across grocery and household departments, from fresh produce and meat to cereals, snacks and paper goods.

Meijer Joins Growing List of Grocers Cutting Prices

The announcement follows Giant Eagle’s decision to lower prices on more than 300 products through Labor Day, a move publicly praised by Trump in a Truth Social post. The president described Giant Eagle as a “GREAT American Grocery Company” and urged other retailers to follow its example.

Walmart, Stop & Shop and Kroger have also announced grocery price rollbacks this summer, making Meijer the latest retailer to highlight savings on everyday staples as food costs remain a key concern for consumers.

How Inflation Impacts Groceries

Meijer’s latest round of grocery discounts comes as food prices remain a major issue for American consumers and a closely watched measure of President Donald Trump’s economic performance.

According to the latest Consumer Price Index report released on Tuesday, food prices were 3.1 percent higher in July than a year earlier. Food consumed at home, a category that includes groceries, rose 2.7 percent over the same period, while the index for meats, poultry, fish and eggs increased 3.5 percent.

That means many shoppers are still paying more for groceries than they were a year ago, even as overall inflation has cooled significantly from the levels seen earlier in the decade. Retailer promotions, like this one from Meijer, may help ease some of that pressure by lowering prices on popular household staples.

Inflation played a decisive role in Trump’s 2024 election victory. Throughout the campaign, Trump argued that Americans were struggling with higher living costs after prices surged during 2021 and 2022 amid pandemic-related supply chain disruptions and broader inflationary pressures. Lowering the cost of everyday necessities, including groceries and gasoline, became a central part of his economic message.

Several major pollsters’ surveys in recent weeks have shown that Trump’s approval rating has fallen to a record low. David Stebenne, professor of history and law at Ohio State University, previously told Newsweek: “[Trump] has a kind of populist appeal with a lot of white working class voters and the heartland, but they’re the kind of people who are very sensitive to increases in the price of gas and groceries.”

The issue remains politically important for the White House. While inflation has fallen markedly from its post-pandemic peak, surveys continue to show voters closely tracking the cost of essentials.
