Bears QB Tyson Bagent is a player to watch

Tyson Bagent is starting to look like a little more than a typical backup quarterback for the Chicago Bears. The more he plays, the more comfortable he appears, and that could become a valuable development for a team that has Caleb Williams at the top.

Ben Johnson, of course, gets credit for Bagent’s progress. The coaching he’s received has helped him develop from a small project into a quarterback who looks like he belongs at the NFL level. Signing him is looking like an increasingly smart move for Chicago.

The biggest reason Bagent has promise is because of what he could provide if the Bears suddenly needed him. If something happened to Williams, God forbit, and forced him to miss four to six weeks, Bagent looks capable of holding things together. That’s a much different situation than simply having a backup who can step onto the field and survive for a game or two.

Bagent appears to have developed enough confidence in his ability that he can be viewed as a legitimate option. That could be a lifesaver for Chicago.

There’s also a scenario where Bagent’s value becomes high enough that another team comes calling. If injuries hit elsewhere around the league, a quarterback with Bagent’s development could become an enticing option for a team searching for someone who can step into a larger role.

So, it wouldn’t be shocking if the Bears received an offer they couldn’t refuse before the trade deadline. But, it would have to be a really good trade offer, because he’s useful in Chicago.
