Vivo Raises Phone Prices as India’s Memory Crunch Gets Worse


If you bought a Vivo Y21 in May, you paid ₹20,999. Buy the same 6GB/128GB configuration after Vivo’s latest revision and you’ll pay ₹21,999. The phone did not get better. The memory inside it simply got more expensive.

“Vivo has made several of its phones in India quietly more expensive,” reported Gadgets Now in its June 15 report on the price revisions.

The affected models include the V70 Elite, V70, Y21 and Y400, with higher-capacity configurations generally taking the biggest hit. The revised prices appeared on Vivo’s website, although the company had not publicly confirmed the reason for the changes.

The important part is not that Vivo raised prices. It is that the same pressure is now appearing across India’s smartphone market, as rising DRAM and NAND costs turn the global AI infrastructure boom into something consumers can see on a store page.

Vivo’s Price Increases Span Premium and Budget Phones

The revisions cover more than one segment, which makes the change harder to dismiss as a premium-model adjustment.

The pattern matters because buyers are seeing higher prices on both mainstream and more expensive devices, rather than a single product absorbing a temporary adjustment.

Xiaomi Shows This Is Bigger Than Vivo

On July 27, the company raised prices on five models in India, including the Xiaomi 17T, Redmi Note 15 5G, Redmi 15 5G, Redmi 15C 5G and Redmi 15A 5G. “Xiaomi has raised prices of five phones in India, including the Xiaomi 17T and the Redmi Note 15 5G,” reported India Today in its July 27 report on the price increases.

The increases ranged from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000, with the Xiaomi 17T receiving the largest ₹5,000 increase across both storage variants.

Xiaomi had already warned about the problem late last year, saying DRAM cost pressure could push smartphone prices significantly higher in 2026. Earlier Redmi models also received price revisions in May and June.

Put alongside Vivo’s changes, the pattern starts to look less like individual pricing decisions and more like manufacturers passing a common component shock down to consumers.

AI Is Pulling Memory Away From Phones

DRAM and NAND are essential to smartphones, but memory manufacturers are also facing enormous demand from AI data centers. “For the first time, smartphones are competing directly with AI infrastructure and memory prices are rising sharply as a result,” said Carl Pei, co-founder and CEO of Nothing, in a June 2026 post discussing the memory-cost surge.

High-bandwidth memory used alongside AI accelerators commands stronger economics than the conventional memory used in consumer devices, encouraging suppliers to direct more capacity toward the data-center market. That creates pressure on the memory available for phones and laptops.

Nothing CEO Carl Pei has offered a particularly stark example, saying memory costs for the company’s Phone (4a) doubled between development and launch, then doubled again afterward. Financial Express has reported that more than 80 smartphone models in India had already experienced significant price increases connected to rising memory costs.

“For Phone (4a), memory costs doubled between when we decided to build the device and when it launched. They’ve doubled again since,” said Carl Pei, co-founder and CEO of Nothing, in June 2026.

“Persistent increases in memory and other component costs prompted almost every major OEM to implement multiple rounds of price hikes, resulting in an average smartphone price hike of around 15% by the end of the second quarter,” said Prachir Singh, Senior Research Analyst at Counterpoint Research.

Price Hike Is Not Entirely About AI

Currency movements, logistics, component contracts and manufacturers’ own pricing strategies can all affect the final retail price. Vivo, in particular, has not publicly attributed its June revisions to AI-related memory demand.

What the evidence does show is a broader supply squeeze affecting the same components across consumer electronics, while AI infrastructure is creating a powerful competing source of demand.

That distinction matters because it keeps the story grounded. The phone in your hand is not suddenly more expensive because an AI company bought one extra memory chip. It is more expensive because the economics of producing those chips have changed.

What This Means for Phone Buyers in India

Indian buyers traditionally expect the festive season to bring deeper discounts, but this year’s promotions may be less generous if manufacturers are already absorbing higher component costs.

That does not mean you should panic-buy a phone. It does mean the old assumption that waiting automatically produces a better price deserves another look.

If you’ve already decided which phone and configuration you want, today’s price may be worth comparing against expected festive discounts rather than assuming the price will inevitably fall. For buyers who can wait, however, there is still little reason to purchase a phone purely out of fear.
