‘SoA’s Kurt Sutter Reacts To Charlie Hunnam’s FX Series ‘Legends’
Sons of Anarchy creator/executive producer Kurt Sutter took to Instagram to assure his followers that he is OK with series star Charlie Hunnam and FX doing a meta take on his motorcycle gang drama with new limited series Legends.
“I’m not involved with Legends at all, nor should I be,” Sutter, wearing a yellow beanie, said in the video filmed in a “hot box”. “It has nothing to do with the characters I created or the mythology. It is really about the show and the legacy of the show, and quite frankly, there are thousands of people who are responsible for that legacy.”
Developed and executive produced by Hunnam, Legends stars Hunnam and fellow SoA cast members Ron Perlman, Sutter’s wife Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Ross.
Legends draws parallels to Galaxy Quest. In it, when the cast of Sons of Anarchy (who will all play themselves) reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.
“Just want folks to know that Charlie came to me early on, when he was in the process of pitching this to the network, to ask for my blessing, knowing that the IP would probably not be able to be invoked for various reasons of legalese stuff, and I gave Charlie my full blessing,” Sutter said. “I wish nothing but the best for him in this project. My wife is in the project.”
Sutter, who had a recurring role on SoA, was creator executive producer and showrunner of the series, which ran on FX for seven seasons, and co-creator/executive producer of the spinoff Mayans M.C. Sutter was fired from the latter in October 2019 and had some pointed parting words at the time for the bosses who let him go after an internal investigation into cast and crew complaints, longtime collaborators John Landgraf and Dana Walden.
Time tends to heal wounds.
“I have nothing but love for John Landgraf and the folks at FX who have been so good to me, so generous,” Sutter said tonight before giving Legends thumbs-up.
“It has my full-blown watch this motherf*cker because I’ve taken a peek at the script that was perhaps just lying on my wife’s knitting table, and it’s so well done, and I think you’ll dig it,” he said. “I love Charlie to death, and I think you will have mad love for this project as well.”
Legends is developed and executive produced by Hunnam and Jonathan Groff, who serves as showrunner, with Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel and Jackie Cohn also serving as executive producers. The series is produced by FX Productions and 20th Television and will be available to watch on FX and Hulu.
