1,000 Stranded on Cruise Ship After Passenger Vanishes Before Dundee Arrival

More than 1,000 passengers and crew were temporarily held aboard the Ambassador Ambition in Dundee, Scotland, on Friday, Aug. 21, after a male passenger was reported missing and feared to have fallen overboard during the ship’s return to port.

The emergency was reported to HM Coastguard at about 8:35 a.m. Friday, when the cruise ship was about 36 nautical miles east of Arbroath in the North Sea.

Police Scotland said it received a report at about 8:55 a.m. that a man had gone overboard.

The vessel subsequently docked in Dundee while a major search-and-rescue operation continued.

Passengers were initially told to remain in designated lounges instead of disembarking as planned while crew conducted a ship-wide search.

They were later cleared to leave the vessel after the search onboard was completed.

What Happened on the Ambition

The passenger had reportedly boarded the ship at Lerwick, Shetland, on Wednesday, its final port of call before Dundee.

Tannoy announcements began calling for the passenger to contact reception during breakfast at around 7:30 a.m. Friday, according to a passenger account reported by the Scottish Sun.

The missing man’s luggage reportedly remained aboard and his bed had not been slept in, details that helped investigators establish that he had not simply left the ship at an earlier stop.

HM Coastguard confirmed the response, saying it was coordinating the operation following a report of a man overboard from a passenger vessel.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said, “A search and rescue operation is currently being carried out by HM Coastguard, but the man remains missing. His next of kin is aware.”

Police said inquiries were continuing.

Major Search Underway Off Scotland

The response has involved multiple emergency resources, including an HM Coastguard helicopter and aircraft, RNLI lifeboats from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Dundee, Arbroath and St Andrews, a commercial search-and-rescue helicopter and nearby vessels.

The search area is significant because the suspected overboard incident occurred while the ship was still at sea, before it reached Dundee.

Authorities have not publicly released the man’s identity or provided details about how he may have gone overboard.

More Than 1,000 People Were Delayed

The incident temporarily disrupted the ship’s scheduled turnaround in Dundee.

Ambassador Cruise Line said passengers were kept informed while the ship underwent a thorough search and confirmed they were subsequently permitted to disembark.

The company said the Ambition was traveling from Lerwick to Dundee when the alarm was raised after a guest was found not to be where expected.

It added that the cruise line was cooperating with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, HM Coastguard and Police Scotland.

The ship had been completing a 13-night solar-eclipse cruise that included Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Shetland before its scheduled return to Dundee.

Its next voyage was scheduled to leave Dundee for Newcastle upon Tyne on Friday evening.
