Who Was Karen Solomon? Massachusetts Wife Wanted in Murder of Her Police Officer Husband Found Dead from Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

Karen Solomon, the Massachusetts fugitive suspected of killing her police officer husband, is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said on Monday. Solomon, 58, fled her Massachusetts home after police issued a warrant for her arrest in connection with the death of her husband, Kurt Solomon, 57.

Worcester Police Chief Paul Saucier said on Monday that medical workers at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital discovered what is believed to be her body in a wooded area near the facility. Police are investigating the incident as a murder-suicide. A warrant was issued for Solomon’s arrest on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon resulting in bodily injury.

Grim Discovery

“We believe this case is a tragic muder-suicide that occurred, and we still have plenty of work to do as far as wrapping up all the pieces to this,” Saucier said. He noted that investigators recovered a handgun near the body. Police said the weapon was not a service firearm, while preliminary evidence indicated that Solomon had suffered a gunshot wound.

In the final video released to the media, Solomon was seen walking into the water at Coes Pond. According to Saucier, her body was discovered about 0.6 miles from the pond.

Saucier also read a statement from the couple’s family during Monday’s briefing. “The nightmare of the past week has left our family heartbroken and rudderless,” the statement said, while also expressing gratitude to the officers working on the investigation.

Police had been searching the Worcester area for Solomon when the latest discovery was made, just one day before her husband’s wake and two days ahead of his funeral.

Last Thursday, Worcester police released surveillance footage showing the woman suspected of killing her husband walking outside a veterinary medical facility about a mile from the crime scene.

In the Ring footage, Solomon appears to be slightly hunched as she walks past the animal center. She also looks over her left shoulder at one point. The video was recorded at around 5:40 a.m. last Tuesday, roughly 10 minutes after officers found Kurt Solomon dead inside the couple’s home on Wildwood Avenue.

Tragic End

Kurt had spent 31 years with the Worcester Police Department, and some of his former colleagues are now investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. He was also the father of two sons.

The tragedy has shaken the couple’s leafy Webster Square neighborhood, where neighbors told local media they had not noticed any signs of trouble.

Karen Solomon was also known for supporting first responders. She co-founded FIRST H.E.L.P., an organization focused on promoting mental health among police officers.

She also authored two books detailing the physical and psychological challenges faced by emergency responders.

At a press conference last week, Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early declined to provide details about how Kurt died, referring to the case only as a domestic incident. Saucier said on Monday that the term “domestic” was used in accordance with Massachusetts state law.

First H.E.L.P., the police mental health organization co-founded by Solomon, stated the tragedy. “Our first concern is for the officer who lost his life, his family, his colleagues, and the Worcester law-enforcement community,” the group said.

“We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected by this tragedy.

“The Board of Directors is focused on maintaining the continuity, integrity, and independence of First H.E.L.P.’s mission, programs, and services to the first-responder community and the families we serve,” the statement continued.

The organization said it would continue supporting affected families and the wider first-responder community.
