King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the Omukama of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom and a Guinness World Records holder as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, died at approximately 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, 2026, at age 34. The official Tooro Kingdom announcement did not disclose a cause of death.

The death followed weeks of uncertainty over the monarch’s health. On Aug. 27, before the announcement of his death, Tooro Kingdom officials confirmed that King Oyo was in critical condition and receiving medical treatment in the United States. Officials had urged the public to avoid speculation and rely on official updates.

Kingdom Confirms Death, Calls For Unity

The announcement was made by Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, prime minister (Omuhikirwa) of Tooro Kingdom. In the official announcement, Rwomiire said:

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, at approximately 10:00 p.m. this evening. This is an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro, and the nation of Uganda. Omukama Atulize. Enkuba Etutire,” Rwomiire stated in the official announcement.

The kingdom called on people in Tooro to remain calm and united and said the Crown would continue.

“I call upon the people of Tooro to remain united, calm and prayerful during this difficult time,” Rwomiire wrote.

The official announcement said King Oyo left behind a prince who would serve as heir, but the identity of the heir would be disclosed later according to the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom.

King’s Medical Condition Remains Officially Undisclosed

The king was said to be in critical condition when he was admitted to medical care in the United States before his death. But the Tooro Kingdom did not note his ailment in its announcements.

Claims that King Oyo had advanced brain cancer have circulated in local media reports, but those claims have not been confirmed by the Tooro Kingdom in its official announcement.

Tooro Kingdom officials had specifically appealed for the public to refrain from speculation and unverified information concerning the king’s health before his death.

From Three-Year-Old King to Nearly 31-Year Reign

King Oyo was born on the 16th of April 1992, to the late Patrick David Matthew King III and Queen Mother Best Kemigisa. His father passed away in August 1995, and Oyo’s reign began on Sept. 12, 1995, at age three.

On his accession, he was the youngest reigning monarch in the world. According to Guinness World Records, King Oyo, better known as Rukirabasaija Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, is the youngest reigning monarch in the world, taking the throne at the age of three.

As a child, the kingdom was ruled by a regency since he was too young. When he turned 18 in April 2010, King Oyo took full control of the operation.

He died less than three weeks before the 31st anniversary of his enthronement (on Sept. 12. He reigned almost 31 years.

King Oyo’s Role in Tooro Kingdom

Tooro Kingdom is a traditional institution in western Uganda. Its monarch serves a cultural role rather than exercising executive political authority under Uganda’s constitutional system.

During his reign, King Oyo was associated with initiatives involving youth, education, health, tourism and environmental conservation. Uganda’s Parliament recognized the kingdom’s contributions to education, health, tourism, sports and cultural preservation during its 30th coronation anniversary in September 2025.

His death marks the end of a reign that had seen an entire generation of the subjects of Tooro rule under Oyo’s kingship. He was reportedly set to feature in future kingdom activities, such as the Tooro Kingdom MTN Masaza Cup finals set for Sept. The coronation anniversary for 6 will be Sept.6’s coronation anniversary will be Sept. 12.

Kingdom Says Crown’s Continuity Remains Assured

Tooro Kingdom has said the continuity of the Crown is assured. The kingdom said King Oyo left behind a prince who is the heir, although the heir’s identity will be formally revealed at an appropriate time under Tooro traditions and customs.

Further details on mourning and burial arrangements are expected from the royal family and the Tooro Kingdom administration.

So far, the main mystery about King Oyo’s death is the cause of his death. The kingdom has confirmed his death, but has not named the disease or medical condition that led to his demise.
