College unaware of pre-existing conditions before football player’s sudden death
MichahJo Barnett, a running back for William Jewell College, died on Saturday after suffering a medical emergency during the team’s season opener against Fort Lewis College in Liberty, Missouri.
A spokesperson for William Jewell College told Newsweek that they weren’t aware of any pre-existing conditions that should have prevented Barnett from playing football.
“The College has no details as to the nature/cause [of the medical emergency],” the spokesperson said.
The school announced his death in a post on X, saying their thoughts and prayers are with the player’s family, teammates, friends and coaches. A vigil was planned for Saturday night on the campus in honor of Barnett and his family.
Barnett experienced the emergency on the sideline during the first quarter. The game was subsequently suspended and later canceled as medical personnel responded. It’s unclear what caused the medical emergency.
Barnett was a junior majoring in business administration and had become an important player in William Jewell’s football program. A native of the Kansas City area who attended Liberty North High School, he helped guide his high school team to a Missouri state championship before continuing his athletic and academic career at William Jewell.
“The world Lost a GREAT person today! MicahJo was the ultimate human. He always put his teammates before himself and brought out the best in everyone around him. In times like this, we’re reminded just how precious and fragile life truly is. Make sure to take the time and tell the ones around you how much you love them,” Greg Jones, a former college football coach and Missouri Football Coach Hall of Famer, posted on X.
Barnett ‘s death came on a day that had begun with promise for the Cardinals and for Barnett personally. He scored a touchdown during the game before the medical emergency occurred. Witnesses described a somber scene as players, coaches and supporters grappled with the unfolding tragedy. Emergency personnel transported Barnett to a local hospital, but he was later pronounced dead.
On the field, Barnett had developed into a standout performer for the Cardinals. After appearing in eight games as a freshman, he emerged as the team’s leading rusher during the 2025 season despite having his year cut short by injury. He rushed for 366 yards and four touchdowns, including a standout performance against Kentucky Wesleyan in which he recorded 150 yards and three scores. Beyond his athletic accomplishments, Barnett was also recognized for his work in the classroom, earning Academic All-Great Lakes Valley Conference honors.
William Jewell is scheduled to play on September 12 at an away game at Kentucky Wesleyan College.
