Australia will evacuate all 24 scientists, tradespeople and support staff from its remote Macquarie Island research station in September or early October because of the potential psychological impact of an H5N1 bird flu outbreak among the island’s wildlife.

The decision was announced on August 28, 2026, even though H5N1 has not yet been detected on Macquarie Island. Officials are preparing for the island’s September-November breeding season, when large numbers of seals and seabirds could be exposed to the virus.

The unusual evacuation is not primarily about the researchers catching bird flu. Australian authorities say the bigger concern is what workers could experience if the virus causes mass deaths among wildlife in the isolated environment.

Macquarie Island is home to huge seal and seabird populations, making a severe outbreak potentially traumatic for people who would have to witness or respond to it.

Why Australia is evacuating the research team before an outbreak

Macquarie Island sits about 2,000 kilometers southeast of mainland Australia, roughly between Tasmania and Antarctica. Its research station supports Australia’s long-term scientific and environmental monitoring in the region.

The Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water said experts expect a high likelihood of significant wildlife mortality during the upcoming breeding season if H5N1 reaches the island. That assessment has led authorities to treat the potential emotional and psychological consequences as a workplace safety issue.

“This is an unusual measure, but it’s the most appropriate course of action based on our assessments of risk and operational realities,” Sean Sullivan, deputy secretary at the Department of Climate Change , Energy, the Environment and Water, said in a statement.

He added that although the risk H5 bird flu poses to humans is considered low, authorities could not ignore the “psychosocial risks of living near potentially large numbers of affected animals.”

The timing is linked to the island’s wildlife breeding season

The evacuation decision comes as Australia prepares for the period when Macquarie Island’s wildlife populations become especially concentrated.

The island can host up to 100,000 seals and millions of seabirds, including more than 850,000 breeding pairs of endemic royal penguins at various times of the year. Elephant seals are particularly important to the risk assessment because they are highly susceptible to H5N1.

Australia has already seen the consequences of avian influenza in remote wildlife areas. In June 2026, authorities reported that thousands of elephant seal pups had died from bird flu on the remote Heard and McDonald Islands.

That experience adds urgency to preparations for Macquarie Island, where a similar outbreak could unfold far from the Australian mainland.

What happens to the 24 people at the station?

The Australian Antarctic Program’s research and supply vessel RSV Nuyina is expected to travel to Macquarie Island in late September or early October to bring the 24 personnel home. Essential cargo will also be retrieved during the operation.

The evacuation does not mean Australia is abandoning the island. Sullivan said the government remains committed to maintaining a long-term presence on Macquarie Island, while officials are considering other ways to continue monitoring conditions there.

For the workers themselves, however, the withdrawal removes the need to remain on the island during a period when a major wildlife disease event could potentially occur.

Why H5N1 is causing concern in remote wildlife colonies

H5N1 is a highly pathogenic form of avian influenza that has spread among birds and, in some regions, infected mammals. The virus has caused major wildlife mortality events, raising concerns about what could happen if it reaches isolated colonies containing thousands of animals.

Macquarie Island’s geography makes the situation particularly difficult. Its remote location means that responding to a rapidly developing wildlife outbreak would be far more complicated than dealing with one near a populated mainland area.

The current decision therefore focuses on reducing the human consequences before an outbreak is confirmed rather than waiting for the virus to arrive.

Australia is taking precautions despite no Macquarie Island cases

As of the August 28 announcement, there were no confirmed H5N1 infections on Macquarie Island. Australia had, however, reported 341 confirmed or presumed positive H5 bird flu cases nationally, according to the reports provided.

There have been no reported H5 cases in Australian poultry or agricultural production, but the virus has increasingly become a concern in wild animals.

The Macquarie Island withdrawal also follows Australia’s first confirmed H5 bird flu case in a mammal and the earlier wildlife deaths at Heard and McDonald Islands, showing how the country’s disease risk is no longer limited to birds.

Why the evacuation matters beyond Macquarie Island

The decision highlights an unusual part of managing wildlife disease: protecting people from the experience of an ecological disaster, not simply from infection.

Researchers stationed in remote areas can face isolation, limited medical support and difficult working conditions even under normal circumstances. Adding the possibility of witnessing widespread animal deaths could create another layer of risk, particularly during a prolonged outbreak.

Australia’s approach means the potential mental-health impact of a wildlife epidemic is being considered alongside biological and logistical threats.

For now, Macquarie Island remains free of detected H5N1. But with the breeding season approaching and the island’s dense wildlife populations creating the possibility of a major mortality event, Australia is choosing to remove its personnel before that risk becomes a reality.
