Oprah’s Book Club Turns 30 With Monthlong Celebration and Fan Surprises
Oprah’s Book Club is marking 30 years with a full month of programming, starting September 2026. Oprah Winfrey launched the club on Sept. 17, 1996, with “The Deep End of the Ocean” by Jacquelyn Mitchard. Thirty years later, she has recommended 124 books to readers.
The anniversary campaign spans several formats, including social media reveals, an e-commerce storefront collection, a reading challenge, and podcast interviews with returning authors.
A Daily Countdown of Favorite Picks
Winfrey opened the anniversary month with “30 Books I Can’t Forget,” a daily social media series revealing one title from the club’s history that has stayed with her. The series highlights selections spanning the club’s full run, from its original talk-show-era picks to more recent additions.
New Storefront and Reading Challenge
The anniversary selections, along with other past Book Club picks, are featured in a new online storefront collection built around the celebration. Readers can browse the curated list of titles the club has recommended since 1996.
Winfrey is also encouraging fans to revisit past picks through a reading challenge running from September 15 to December 30, 2026. Anyone who reads a previous Oprah’s Book Club selection during that window can unlock a themed profile badge marking participation in the challenge.
Podcast Conversations with Returning Authors
The celebration will close with a special run of Oprah’s Book Club podcast episodes beginning September 29, 2026. The lineup brings back several previously featured authors, including Viola Davis, Barbara Kingsolver, Abraham Verghese, Elizabeth Strout, and Ocean Vuong. Vuong’s novel “Emperor of Gladness” was the club’s May 2025 selection.
Since the end of Winfrey’s daytime talk show in 2011, Oprah’s Book Club has continued independently, with her picks now typically paired with an author interview released through her podcast.
“Recommending a book and having other people enjoy it as I do still give me a little thrill as does talking to authors, who are rockstars,” Winfrey said in a statement marking the anniversary.
Oprah’s Book Club has functioned as one of the most influential forces in commercial publishing since the 1990s, with the power to turn a single recommendation into a bestseller almost overnight. Its 30-year run reflects a rare case of a media figure sustaining a book-recommendation platform across multiple formats and decades, adapting from broadcast television to social media, e-commerce, and podcasting as reading habits and distribution channels changed. The anniversary also underscores the continued commercial and cultural weight of celebrity book endorsements in an industry where discoverability remains a persistent challenge for authors and publishers alike.
The September programming will run through the reading challenge’s December 30 close date, giving readers a three-and-a-half-month window to participate. The podcast episodes beginning September 29 will roll out over the following weeks, featuring conversations with the five returning authors. Winfrey has not indicated whether the anniversary celebration will influence the pace or format of future book selections beyond the current campaign.
