Liza Minnelli Is “Grateful to Be Alive” Amid Substance Use Disorder Journey
“I finally understand,” she wrote in the book’s prologue. “I’ve been waging a war my whole adult [life] with what we now call SUD, substance abuse disorder. It’s a disease, a condition caused by physical and mental wiring that can trigger abuse of drugs and alcohol. I got it from Mama.”
Today, she hopes to use her platform to help others struggling with the condition.
“Now we’ve begun working with gifted Dr. Richard LeBeau, Director of the @ucla Psychology Clinic, to develop a program that will bring the lessons learned from a lifetime of recovery high notes and low notes, to as many people as possible,” she continued in her Instagram. “We’re bringing care to the people who need recovery, as well as guidance for those—like Michael and Lorna—who support us.”
“Family, friends, husbands, wives, children, colleagues … must know how to help us,” she added. “Not enable us. I’ve lost too many people I love. I know this: without sobriety, we will die.”
She concluded her message, “I’m excited to start spreadin’ the news, and help as many people as we can. I love you.”
