‘Being Heumann’ Trailer: Siân Heder’s ‘CODA’ Follow-Up

Apple Original Films on Wednesday released the trailer for Being Heumann, the new film from Oscar-winning CODA filmmaker Siân Heder that is gearing up for its world premiere next week as the opening film of the Toronto Film Festival.

The film tells the true story of disability-rights advocate Judy Heumann, played by Doctor Who alum Ruth Madeley. Based on Heumann’s memoir, it centers on the year 1977, when Heumann led more than 100 disabled people to take over the San Francisco Federal Building, kicking off a 28 day sit-in — the longest occupation of a federal building in U.S. history.

The protestors form a tightly bound community, refusing to leave until the government enforces section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which required all federal spaces to become accessible.

Mark Ruffalo plays the bureaucrat who stands in the protesters’ way. Dylan O’Brien, Jon Beavers, Rob Delaney and Ray Fisher also star in the pic, which will debut in select theaters November 6 before dropping on Apple TV on November 13.

Being Heumann screens in Toronto on September 10 at Roy Thomson Hall; the fest is also world premiering that day Prima Facie starring Cynthia Erivo and The Assassin(s) from Korean filmmaker Hur Jin-ho.

TIFF runs September 10-20.
