College football fans aren’t happy with Kirk Herbstreit
Kirk Herbstreit is well known as an ESPN broadcaster and college football analyst, and his beloved golden retriever, Peter, has captured the hearts and attention of many fans around the nation.
However, a recent decision by Herbstreit involving Peter has drawn plenty of criticism from college football fans, just as the season got underway.
On Saturday, Front Office Sports shared a quick video clip of Herbstreit’s latest venture, the opening of his “Peter Fan Club Pop-Up Shop” featuring all sorts of Peter-themed merchandise.
The pop-up store in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, features an assortment of items, ranging from light blue shirts with the message “Where’s Peter” on the front to hats, coasters, and soft beverage holders.
Many of the items are light blue and white with Peter’s likeness on them. While it appears cute and fun for anyone who is a loyal fan of Peter, many commenters slammed the latest move by Herbstreit featuring his pet.

“This is delusional narcissism on a level I’ve never seen,” an extremely popular comment said on Front Office Sports’ X post.
“if i looked up the word ‘narcissist’ in the webster english dictionary, Kirk Herbstreit should be right next to that word,” another commenter wrote.
“This is unnatural, forced, and beyond weird. There is no audience for this. It’s like doublespeak and being shoved down our throats. No one gives a [expletive] that Kirk owns a dog??” another individual commented.
Someone commented, “I don’t mind the dog at all, but this is over the top. Who would buy this stuff?”
Others weighed in with comments, including “You have a dog. Congratulations” and “And this isn’t even the original dog. It’s the backup.”
Herbstreit’s previous service dog, his gold retriever Ben, became popular through many appearances and features on social media. However, Ben died in November 2024 at 10 years old after battling cancer.
After Ben’s death, Peter became Herbstreit’s new traveling companion on various college football trips. Peter now has an official fan club, complete with an Instagram page and an official website, for interested fans.
For some dog enthusiasts, Herbstreit’s latest venture may be considered cute and fun. For others, the constant focus on his dog on social media or during television coverage of games seems extremely frustrating.
