Alabama QB Keelon Russell makes bold Ryan Coleman-Williams guarantee

Saturday in Tuscaloosa gave fans their first real chance to see how this new-look Alabama Crimson Tide squad has come together after months of hype, and for the most part, they lived up to it. Alabama rolled to a commanding 48-10 victory over East Carolina, holding the Pirates to 162 total yards and allowing just a single field goal in the entire second half.

Sophomore quarterback Keelon Russell was the star of the show, finishing 18 of 30 passing for 256 yards while leading all rushers with 86 yards on the ground and a rushing touchdown. Meanwhile, explosive wideout Ryan Coleman-Williams led all receivers with 130 yards on just five catches, though he also had some costly drops and a fumble.

“Obviously, as a whole, we felt like we left some things out there, including myself,” Coleman-Williams said after the game.

Russell backed his junior receiver postgame and made a bold guarantee on their budding connection. “Ryan is a phenomenal player. Not just a player, he’s an athlete on and off the field. Stuff don’t bother him like that. He’d come to me, he was like, ‘I’m gonna get you right. I’m gonna get us better.’ And at the end of the season, you’re gonna be looking at the best duo in the country,” Russell said.

“That guy has a mindset of steel. Nothing gets in his head. A drop is not gonna get in his head, and we’re just gonna keep pushing. We gotta have a 1-0 mindset, like I said. And we connected on a lot more routes, a lot more plays that got us in field goal range or got us a touchdown. So we just keep all the negativity or the bad things behind us and keep playing football.”

Nobody’s ever questioned Coleman-Williams’ ability. A Mobile, Alabama, native and former five-star recruit, he led all Alabama pass catchers during his 2024 freshman season with 865 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 48 catches, averaging 18.0 yards per catch. That earned him second-team All-American, freshman All-American, and first-team All-SEC honors.

But last season, his production dropped to 689 yards and four touchdowns on 49 catches, averaging 14.1 yards per catch, as he also struggled at times with drops.

Still, Saturday’s performance showed what’s possible if he can clean up that part of his game. His explosiveness alone makes him must-watch TV.

As for “best duo in the country,” that might be a tough claim to back up, given the competition from pairs like Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith, or Darian Mensah and Malachi Toney.
