Who Is Carly Korwin? Spencer Korwin’s Widow Calls His Death ‘Nightmare’ After Former Team USA Triathlete Drowns During Family Vacation

The grieving widow of former Team USA triathlete Spencer Korwin, who drowned during a family vacation on Shelter Island, broke down in tears on Sunday as she remembered her beloved husband at his funeral.

Spencer Korwin, a 38-year-old Manhattan father of two, was remembered during a heartbreaking service at Temple Israel on the Upper East Side as a devoted dad with a loving personality. He was found dead Wednesday beneath the dock at The Pridwin Hotel. “This is a nightmare. This is the worst day of my life. I can’t accept that this is real and that Spencer is not going to come home,” Spencer’s wife Carly Korwin said through sobs.

Wife Devastated

“Spencer was more than I could ever have dreamed of when it came to a husband, a father, and a friend. He was the best human I have ever met, and he was the love of my life. We had the most beautiful and special once-in-a-lifetime type of love, and we knew it,” the heartbroken widow added.

“We always said forever isn’t long enough. And I will never be able to make sense as to why this incredible life we built together, filled with happiness and so much love, was ripped away from us in an instant.”

Carly said the couple, who started dating years after graduating from Syracuse University, had also lost the chance to have more children together. They already shared two young daughters, Sadie, 4, and Colette, 1.

“He wrote me and the girls notes all the time and hung them around the apartment,” his heartbroken soulmate said. “He was filled with surprises and hugs just because… he had automated texts set up twice a day just to remind me that he loves me, I’m a wonderful mom and wife.

“I know the girls will never stop missing him, and he will forever be their hero.”

Drowning Believed to be Cause of Death

Korwin is believed to have died by drowning during the family vacation. Korwin was staying at the hotel with his family when he decided to go for a morning swim, authorities said. When he failed to return hours later, his wife alerted hotel staff, who called emergency services.

An hours-long search was launched around the Crescent Beach-North Channel area and nearby waterways before Korwin’s body was found. Shelter Island Emergency Medical Services sent two ambulances and several volunteers, while marine and air units also joined the search.

Shelter Island Police Department Det. Sgt. Jack Thilberg said investigators believe Korwin drowned accidentally, although the investigation is still ongoing.

“There wasn’t anything unusual,” John Kirincic, a master mariner with the Southold Town Police Department’s Marine One, told the Shelter Island Reporter about the weather that day. “There was no fog or anything bad.”

Still, Kirincic explained that the area can have strong currents because of the narrow passage where the tide moves through.
