Why Is South Park Trolling Donald Trump With Its New ‘South America’ Name?

South Park is taking another shot at Donald Trump, and this time the joke starts with the show’s name.

The long-running Comedy Central animated series announced that it is changing its name to “South America” ahead of its Season 29 premiere. The move comes after Trump has pushed several efforts involving changes to the names of geographic locations.

Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone announced the change on Sept. 8, just days before the new season is set to begin. The announcement also came shortly after South Park won the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program for its episode “Sermon On The ‘Mount.”

Why Did South Park Change Its Name?

Trump has pushed to put “America” into the names of locations, including the Gulf of Mexico, which his administration moved to rename the “Gulf of America.” He also ordered the renaming of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”

Trump later suggested changing the name of New Mexico to “New America,” giving South Park another opening for one of its trademark jokes.

That is where the show’s new name comes in.

Instead of simply making another joke about Trump in an episode, Parker and Stone used the show’s own branding to make their point. If places are getting new names with “America” added to them, then South Park can apparently join in too.

The creators said they were “inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google” before announcing that South Park would be changing its name to “SOUTH AMERICA.” They also thanked parent company Paramount in a sarcastic reference to its corporate changes, calling it a “Skydance Capitulation.”

South America is already the name of a continent, so turning the familiar South Park title into “South America” makes the whole thing sound deliberately over the top.

South Park Has Been Making Fun of Trump

Trump has been a major target for South Park in recent seasons. The show’s political satire has repeatedly focused on the president, his administration and the way he is portrayed in American politics and popular culture.

The series has never avoided making jokes about politicians, but its recent Trump storylines have received particular attention. Season 27 put Trump at the center of several storylines, while Season 28 continued the show’s political focus.

The latest name change comes at a time when the show is already getting plenty of attention for its Trump jokes. And the timing is hard to miss.

South Park Just Won an Emmy

Before announcing the “South America” name, South Park picked up another Emmy.

The series won Outstanding Animated Program at the 2026 Creative Arts Emmy Awards for “Sermon On The ‘Mount.” The Television Academy lists the episode as the 2026 winner in the category.

The win also gave the show another chance to make fun of Trump.

After the Emmy victory, the official South Park account shared an image mocking Trump over his history with the awards. The joke referenced Trump’s previous Emmy nominations for The Apprentice and his failure to win.

So the Emmy win itself became part of the show’s ongoing Trump material.

The “South America” announcement followed soon after, giving the series another way to keep the joke going outside the actual episodes.

When Does South Park Season 29 Premiere?

Season 29 of South Park will premiere Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Comedy Central.

New episodes will also be available to stream on Paramount+. According to South Park Studios, episodes will follow on Sept. 30, Oct. 14, Oct. 28, Nov. 11 and Nov. 25.
