Bob Mackie—Legendary Designer for Cher, Marilyn Monroe, Taylor Swift & More—Dead at 87

The world has lost some sparkle.

Bob Mackie, the legendary costume and fashion designer, died Sept. 14. He was 87.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Mr. Bob Mackie passed away today,” the statement shared to his Instagram read. “He lived his 87 years to the fullest, fulfilling his dream of being a Fashion and Costume Designer, which is all he ever wanted to do. His genius and extraordinary designs will live on forever, continuing to bring beauty into this world.”

A cause of death for Mackie has not yet been confirmed. Mackie was preceded in death by his son Robert “Robin” Mackie Jr.—whom he shared with ex Lulu Porter—as well as his longtime partner Ray Aghayan, who died in 2011.

Mackie first dove into the fashion world as an assistant for costume designer Jean Louis in the 1960s. At the time, he designed Marilyn Monroe’s now infamous gown worn during her iconic performance at John F. Kennedy’s birthday in 1962. (He later slammed Kim Kardashian for wearing it to the 2022 Met Gala: “Nobody else should be seen in that dress.”)
