Who Were Malaika Chitre and Navam Kaul? Indian Duo Caught on Video Sitting on NYC Subway Tracks Before Being Fatally Hit by Train Were Likely Drunk

A man and woman who were fatally struck by a train while sitting on the tracks at a Manhattan subway station may have been so drunk that they failed to realize the approaching train until it was too late, according to sources.

Kaul Navam, 24, reportedly fell or ended up on the tracks inside the Spring Street subway station early Sunday, prompting Malaika Chitre, also 24, to climb down to help him, law-enforcement sources said. Chitre appeared to pull Navam toward her before both were struck by an oncoming No. 4 train at about 3:15 a.m., according to the sources. Harrowing video capturing their final moments before they were killed.

Doomsday Couple Didn’t Realize Danger

The video shows the pair facing the approaching train as it moves toward them. Investigators were trying to find out whether one or both had been so drunk that they failed to grasp the danger until it was too late, according to sources.

No suicide notes were found, the sources said, although investigators have not ruled out suicide as a possible motive.

There was also no evidence that either person had been pushed or accidentally fallen onto the tracks.

NYPD officers were later seen at the station, where one of the bodies had been covered on the platform. The station appeared to have been closed following the deaths.

The incident came just over a week after an MTA employee and mother of three was fatally struck by a train while working on the tracks.

Moet McCullum, a 41-year-old construction flagger, was working on the southbound tracks at the 161st Street-Yankee Stadium station at about 11:30 p.m. on Sept. 3 when she was hit by a D train, according to the MTA.

Too Frequent Incidents

Subway flaggers are responsible for warning train operators about active work zones. Several other incidents involving people and subway tracks were reported over the summer. In July, an elderly woman was pushed onto the tracks in Midtown by a man described as deranged, prompting bystanders to rush to her aid.

The 70-year-old woman was attacked on July 18 on the northbound side of the 57th Street and 7th Avenue station in Manhattan shortly before 11:30 a.m., according to the NYPD.

A month earlier, a 47-year-old nurse was randomly shoved into the path of an incoming train in The Bronx, suffering a bloody concussion.

“I glanced to the right, and I see something white coming towards me,” Josue Romano told The Post afterward.

“It was real fast because when I glanced, it was already coming to me, so I didn’t have time to react, to like kind of get out the way, and that’s when it happened. I got hit.

“He pushed me in the back right in train that was coming in.”
