Pete Alonso hits game-tying blast against Mets for 300th career homer
In yet another surreal scene during a series that has been filled with them, Pete Alonso crushed a milestone, game-tying home run at Citi Field — and breathed in the adoration from Mets fans who had just watched him potentially steal a game from the team they root for.
With one out in the top of the ninth inning of a game the Mets led by one on Tuesday, Alonso got a 2-0 ghost forkball from Kodai Senga that did not disappear and instead was quite visible in the middle of the strike zone.
Alonso turned on it, demolishing his 300th career home run in a ballpark that has seen plenty of them.
The swing was less jarring than the reaction: Alonso tossed his bat away and circled the bases to largely cheers from the 28,097 on hand.
“Pete Alonso” cheers broke out until Alonso — in a visiting ballpark, having just tied the game, 3-3 — took a curtain call from a fan base that does not have much to root for, and thus is rooting for the one who got away.
And as those cheers quieted, a rousing, stadium-wide round of “Fire Stearns” overtook Queens.
