Elizabeth Holmes: Theranos Fraudster Set To Shift From Prison Into Halfway House To Complete Remaining Sentence

Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced founder of Theranos, is reportedly preparing to leave the minimum-security prison where she has been serving her sentence for the past three years and transfer to a halfway house, according to a new report.

Holmes, 42, has been approved for placement at a community correction center, commonly referred to as a halfway house, in Texas. She is expected to transfer there next August, according to an update from the Department of Justice’s Victim Notification System obtained by ABC News. The former Silicon Valley star has been serving time at Federal Prison Camp Bryan since May 2023. Ghislaine Maxwell is also being held at the Texas facility.

Change of Address

Holmes is set to leave the minimum-security women’s prison and transfer to the Austin Transitional Center in Del Valle on Aug. 23, 2027, according to the notification. The Federal Bureau of Prisons didn’t confirm whether Holmes is being transferred, saying it “does not discuss the conditions of confinement for any individual, including release plans,” a spokesperson told The New York Post.

The agency also explained that “per BOP policy, specific designation information cannot be released until after an individual arrives at their designated institution.”

BOP said placement decisions are based on several considerations, including “the level of security and supervision required, medical or programmatic needs, separation or security considerations necessary for the individual’s safety, and other relevant factors, such as proximity to the individual’s release residence.”

Residential reentry centers, widely known as halfway houses, are designed to help inmates transition back into the community as they approach release. These facilities offer supervised support that can include employment counseling, job placement and help with managing finances, according to BOP.

Reason Remains Unclear

Holmes is expected to complete the rest of her sentence at the Austin Transitional Center, a privately operated 460-bed community corrections facility located about seven miles southeast of downtown Austin.

Once released, Holmes will remain in Austin and be monitored by the United States Probation Office, ABC reported. The former Theranos CEO and mother of two is serving an 11-year prison sentence after being found responsible for misleading investors in the blood-testing company she founded in 2003.

In 2022, Holmes was convicted on four counts of wire fraud and conspiracy for defrauding investors. She was also ordered to pay $452 million in restitution and later appealed to President Trump for an early release from prison.

Her sentence was reduced by one year in March after a federal judge applied changes to sentencing guidelines for first-time, nonviolent offenders.

Holmes has recently returned to the public eye following the release of a trailer for a documentary secretly recorded about her life. In the footage, she is seen telling the interviewer, “I’m not deceiving you.”

The much-anticipated documentary, “You Can See Everything,” is set to premiere on Oct. 16. The full trailer, released on Wednesday, also shows co-director Nathan Fielder bringing Holmes to tears and asking her wealthy husband whether he believed she was “scamming” him.
