Tony Parker Goes Viral With Fiery Speech, Reminding Spurs Fans of the Past
Tony Parker spent nearly two decades learning under head coach Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs. Now, as Parker begins the next chapter of his basketball career, it appears some of those lessons are following him to the sidelines.
The Hall of Fame point guard went viral after delivering a fiery halftime speech to his ASVEL players during their EuroLeague season opener against Maccabi Tel Aviv.
ASVEL entered halftime trailing 48-37, and the four-time NBA champion was clearly unhappy with what he had seen from his team.
The viral video from inside the locker room showed a passionate Parker demanding more from his players before they returned to the floor.
“But it’s one thing we can’t stop. Let’s play [expletive] defense,” Parker said to his team during halftime. “Stay in front of people. Respect what we say with the coach. Don’t do whatever you want. If not, you’re going to come sit next to me on the bench because I want to win this [expletive] game. We are 14-15; we can’t make stupid mistakes like that.
“On offense, we do what we do. Make sure we call our plays, and we’ll be fine. We’re going to win this game on defense. As long as we play defense and we stop them, we’ll be fine. And then offensively, we go. OK? I want five guys on the court every single time in the second half who will play hard with a lot of energy and listen to what we say. Just trust us. Let’s go.”
The message worked.
ASVEL responded by outscoring Maccabi 27-13 in the third quarter and eventually completed the comeback with an 85-82 victory.
For longtime Spurs fans, Parker’s emphatic approach may have looked familiar.
Parker spent 17 seasons playing for Popovich in San Antonio after the Spurs selected him with the 28th overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft. Popovich quickly handed his 19-year-old point guard the keys to the car, inserting Parker into the starting lineup just five games into his rookie season.
Like most relationships, things weren’t always easy between the two.
Parker has spoken openly about how demanding Popovich was early in his career, while Popovich himself has acknowledged just how hard he coached the young guard. Fellow Hall of Famer Tim Duncan once described Parker as the hardest-coached player he had seen.
While most players might have crumbled under the pressure, Parker used the tough love to help shape him.
Parker developed into one of the best point guards of his generation, winning four NBA championships, earning six All-Star selections and becoming the first European player to win NBA Finals MVP in 2007.
Now, Parker is the one doing the coaching.
He officially took over as ASVEL’s head coach this year, a career that began when he led France at the 2026 FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup.
Decades later, Parker still leans on his former coaches for guidance.
“I wanted to know how they had felt,” Parker told FIBA while discussing conversations he had with Popovich and other respected coaches before making the move into coaching. Parker has used advice from his mentors to develop his own identity as a coach.
Friday’s halftime speech offered an early glimpse of what that style could look like.
The player who once had to respond to Popovich’s demanding coaching is now responsible for getting that same type of response from his own players.
Against Maccabi Tel Aviv, at least, Parker pushed the right buttons. His team entered the locker room down 11 points and walked out of the arena with a victory. For Spurs fans who watched Popovich challenge Parker for nearly two decades, there was something familiar about the scene.
Now, the longtime student becomes the teacher, an honor that Parker clearly doesn’t take lightly.
