Most Shocking MTV VMAs Moments: Britney Spears & Madonna’s Kiss, Kanye West & Taylor Swift and More
Ah, the MTV Video Music Awards, where Kanye West once proved that, even if you theoretically have a point, there is most definitely a wrong place and wrong time to share it.
But at least the VMAs has always been an awards show where the shocking and unexpected are, well, expected to happen, from Britney Spears bringing the house down in 2001 with the help of a Burmese python named Banana to Lady Gaga showing up decked out in meat in 2010.
And even though most of the Best New Artist nominees for the 2026 MTV VMAs, taking place Sept. 27 at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, weren’t even born yet when Britney and Madonna kissed onstage in 2003, years are but a construct to the Material Girl, who leads the field with 11 nominations and will be opening the show.
Right behind her is Taylor Swift with nine nominations, the Life of a Showgirl: Encore artist still finding the VMAs a hospitable place to be honored despite what happened when she won her very first Moon Person in 2009.
